I don't know what you mean by "soft" maple, but you should be able to find a parent tree nearby.

They often start with brownish-red new growth. If you don't find a parent, then 5 lobes = sugar or norway; 3 lobes = red or amur or silver or boxelder; rarely it could be striped maple (but that would have green/white striped bark. Palmate = jap maple.

The only maples we have around our house are sugar, silver (soft), and a crimson king next door. It has fully leafed out and the leaves are still brown. Our sugar maples are green.
