I'm growing it from a seed. I live in zone 4(MN). Is it okay to plant it in the fall or should I wait till spring? Also...I am wanting it to grow on our fence. I read that I need to use chicken wire for this. Will it hang over on the other side of the fence or do I have to put chicken wire there too? I am wanting it to cover my fence-do I need to cover the whole fence with chicken wire?

Thanks!!!

what i've learned is this:

clematis seeds should be planted in the fall for spring germination, or put in the freezer for 3 weeks if planted indoors. and
Most kinds will only need the chix wire until they get established... they will grab the fence after that

oh yeah, and don't forget to plant something that can shade the roots. they don't like it if their roots are in the sun.
