Yes, Mary, you have to have contact to the
soil where the leaves meet the main stem....
You can even pull off the leaves in that
spot, and then slit the stem, just below the node..
*(The roots would come out of the area from where the leaves were...)*
Then put the rooting hormone right around the node, *not tooooo much*
So I might try again with a blue or white plastic shopping bag
I have never used the plastic bag when trying to root the stem on the ground...
Usually, the plastic bag method is when the stem
is up in the air...*You can even use a sandwich bag, cut one side up the bag, load with the dirt or a spagnum moss I guess* and then duct tape around, without touching the plant.
