My runner beans are against a south facing brick wall which I keep well watered and although they appear very healthy with much foliage, the flowers drop without leaving formed beans on 90 % of the trusses. It just leaves many short stalks. The bees are plentiful and it is not bird attacks so what can be causing this?
Help would be appreciated
Garth, welcome to the forum.
It depends on the beans. I know that scarlet runner beans will flower but not produce when the temps are too high. If your beans are against a south facing brick wall, the micro climate that this creates is likely to raise the growing zone at least by one zone: i.e. from a zone 5 to a zone 6 or higher. The further south you are, the more it will probably raise the growing zone. If this is the case, then the beans will start to produce when the weather cools off.
boy, I'm glad I read that. I planted my runner beans in the shade last year and they did okay. I was planning on full sun this year but didn't get to plant. Full sun here would have been too hot on them. I'll have to make me a note
thanks
