Last year I planted some rubarb. This year I've fertilized it a couple times to get bigger & thicker stalks. I used fertilzer with NPK ratio of 20-30-20. But, what has happened is there are more stalks, that are thin. What could I use to get bigger stalks? Or do I wait ti'll next year for the plant to mature even more?

wavey , thebearswoman! I am sorry that I don't know anything about rhubarb, but just wanted to welcome you to the forum. Don't despair, though. I am sure someone will be along shortly that can answer your question. Meanwhile, you could do a search on the board and find out some information.

Usually, for us here in my growing zone of 5,
we only harvest in the spring time and early summer...
Nothing past that...*someone told me there
is a second harvest, but stalks are only pencil
thin..*

And you've posted that

I personally wouldn't use that on rhubarb..
the higher middle number makes the plant
want to flower and/or make seeds...

I only use compost or a very aged manure
in the spring around the circumference of
where the drip line would be for the plant....

I know that the plant likes a growing medium
of organic type to be grown in.

Does that help a little bit...
*I am still new to growing rhubarb,
so there maybe a few other's along the way
with additional answers for you!!!

Hey, and Welcome to The Garden Helper's Forum

Oh yeah I agree that type of fertilizer was the wrong thing to put on them. Maybe a more balanced type like 20-20-20 would have been better. Live and learn I guess lala

Hold it Mr Plant doc you are the one who put it on the rhubarb! So if you are so smart buy me some 20-20-20!!!

I second Weezie's advice. Also someone told me that the more water they get the faster they grow. Not sure about that bit of wisdom but I have been able to harvest all spring and summer. Maybe I just lucked out and found the perfect home in my yard for them. Anyway, hope you find the answer.
