Hi francine

if the little shoot growing next to the main plant is slightly paler in color than the mother plant you really want to cut it out below ground level, it's a 'sucker'.
A weeker version of the plant that will weaken the mother plant.

Hope this helps

Hi Francine, how are you? Haven't seen ya on the PM lately. I've always heard to cut the suckers, but I know a LOT of people who use them to root plants in other areas or to make the original plant fuller. I guess if the original plant is healthy that suckers don't hurt that much. flw
