Hi, I don't know who to ask but my son just moved into an old farm house that has spiders.(granny long legs) and I don't know how to get rid of them? Can anyone help?

This is probably not what you want to hear, but why do you want to get rid of them?

Daddy long legs/harvestmen are not actually spiders, cannot bite people, and they eat numerous insects and spiders. They might be doing you more of a favor just by being there than you realize.

I'm a spider saver, as long as they stay
in a corner, I'm fine with them.

But, I know that some people do not like them.

Do you mind going after them and taking them outside?? If something like a big, black spider bugs me or a bee or wasp gets in the house I take a plastic see~through cup and piece of stiff cardboard....
Take the cup put it over the bug real quick and slide the card board between the cup and the say wall or light fixture, etc. what ever it may be.
Then the animal is in the cup and I don't have to touch it, I don't have to keep it in the house or have to hurt it...
I'm a big believer in if it isn't hurting you, leave it alone.
With having boys and visiting boys, they always want to squwish the bugs, and told them while they're visiting this is a bug sanctuary,
NO SQUWISHING ALLOWED!!!!

I have tons on TONS of them out here.i gave up trying to rid them.I do wish they would get rid of ALL the recluse spiders so my hubby will stop getting bit by them...

*** little known fact...once bitten by a recluse spider it leaves an antivenom that they can sence and you WILL be bit again***

but daddy-long-legs are harmless.i have them in huge groups and they pile up on each other like a big party in a room too small.I spray painted some this summer(yellow) then for months on end& do still see some ...i see yellow spider here& there.I have noticed they are different colors(no not SPRAYPAINTED ones :p )
I'd leavethem...if they are their is because is a good insect supply there for them to eat on

wow i did'nt know that about the recluse, my brother was bitten by one and had to go and get the wound scraped out everyday. and then my sister-in-law was bitten too and she had to spend 3days in the hospital. most people don't even know we have recluses in iowa.

Thanks for the links, Papito. I checked them out to make sure my recluses really were brown recluses, and they are. You don't know how hard that was, I have a serious case of arachnaphobia, can't even look at a live spider on TV! Although I seldom find one in the house, I take all the suggested precautions (banging shoes out before putting them on, shaking out clothes that have been stored, checking the shower before I step in, not reaching into dark places, etc.) I have a few friends that have been bitten, not only the bite, but the treatments, were a horrible experience for them!

Sorry, Weezie but spiders around here have 2 choices - run really fast, or it's all over for them!!

Okay, gotta stop talking about this, I'm getting all creepy crawly!

I could not nor will I live in and area like that.

Nikkal I am with you on this one....even if their is a tiny spider in my bedroom I will be up forever until I find it...The thought of them crawling on me at night, possibly on my face freaks me out!!! I attribute my spider fear to my sister having a pet tarantula when I was a little girl!! That she used to make me pet...talk about disgusting.....Spiders don't have much of a chance in this house.... I have had an infestation of ladybugs for the past months....I mean I've probably caught a hundred of them....it's really gotten cold now and there are only maybe 2 left....I don't know why we have so many get in the house...my mom lives across the st and I never remembered seeing any in her house growing up....someone told me they bite...I didn't believe it until one landed on my leg and bit me!!!

I say fumigate/squish/smash/be rid of them all!!!!

We have many, many black widows here and there are some with long legs that are almost translucent that bite! Get rid of them ALL!!!!
After dark I am out with a flashlight and I am spraying/smashing black widows and smooshing snails/slugs. I usually leave the big garden spiders alone or keep after the webs that are in my walkway and they usually move to another area!
Nothing is worse than walking to the front door in the middle of the night and putting your face right into the middle of the web....RIGHT WHERE MR. SPIDER is waiting!!!!

Invade MY house they are a gonner! Ewwwwwwwww! 5 cats help out alot....even if it is to just spot the spiders for you as they crawl across the floor!

Strangest thing happened today - after posting on this topic last night.
Ran into a friend of mine today, who told me he'd been bitten by a Brown Recluse a couple of weeks ago. He showed me the wound on his hand, it looked exactly like one of the pics on the site Papito posted. He knew he'd been bitten (saw the spider bite him, couldn't prevent it) but he delayed going to the Dr. until a couple of days ago, hoping the wound would heal. Dr. confirmed that it was a Brown Recluse bite, and prescribed antibiotics. My friend happened to mention to the Dr. that the inside of his nose was sore, and he thought he had some sort of infection in the corner of his eye. Dr. ran some tests, and it turns out the bite has caused a staph infection in his nose, eye, and lymph nodes. He's currently on a very strong dose of antibiotics, followups with his Dr. every 3 days! I didn't know a b. r. bite could cause that. Now I've got another reason to be scared of them!
