I am considering getting a pineapple plant but I am worried about how it will do in a potted plant rather then put in the ground. We are renting a house out here in Nevada and there really isn't anywhere for a garden out here so I thought about putting it in a pot. Would that be a bad idea? And should I just wait until I get my own house and do a garden with the pineapple plant then?

Pineapple plants are quite well siuted for pot culture. They root easily from the top of a pineapple from a grocery store. The trick from my experience is not to over-water the plant...as it will rot. They are in the same family as a bromeliad, so watering in the crown of the plant gives it plenty of moisture. If your plant doesn't root very quickly, do not be distressed, as the roots on a pineapple are basically to help the plant maintain balance and keep it from toppling over as it grows taller.
