I posted this question in another forum but thought it might do better here. I've decided to cook my turkey in one of those oven bags but I'm confused as to whether follow the instructions that are on the turkey for how long to cook it, or follow the oven bag instructions. Duh There's a 2 hour difference between the two. This is the last thing (I hope) that I have to figure out before Thursday. Other than that I think I'm ready and prepared for this. sca

Are you cooking in the oven,or a roaster?
The bag seals in the heat, how big is the turkey?

I use the bags myself. I just follow the directions that are enclosed in the box that it comes in. It is really simple and makes clean-up of the pan a breeze...

I'm cooking in the oven. The directions for the bags say 3 3-1/12 hours for 20-25lbs. My turkey is just under 22 lbs. Thanks Dixie Angel, I'll just plan on following the directions for the bags. That means I'll have some extra time to cook something else in the oven first.

yes, follow the instructions that are included with the bag...remember to compensate for a stuffed bird vs an unstuffed bird (stuffed will be another pound or so of weight).

remember to put the flour in the bag (and shake it around) before you put the bird in!!!

you might want to break some toothpicks in half and stick the pointy ends in the top of the bird - this will keep the bag from touching the bird as it cooks...just put them in enough so that they stay in place - the rough end will not poke through the bag but will support it.

the bags really do make for a nice juicy bird...you won't get the crusty skin though.

if you do want it crusty, you can either lightly coat with oil (i prefer olive) before closing the bag up and it will get a bit crunchy OR about a 1/2 before the bird is completely cooked you can open the top of the bag (and pull it away the bird) and then put it back in the oven to finish cooking and for the skin to brown up (a little butter spread on at the last moment before returning the bird to the oven will brown up quickly).
