Hey all, winters on a downhill slide now. We heat with wood, and when there's a nice piece of wood for something other than burning, I try to make good use of it. My pops wanted some ash for ax handles so here are the slabs he'll be getting in the spring, 2-1/4"x11"x44". The milling is done with a chainsaw mounted milling attachment.

That's some beautiful wood you have there....

My father and I always sifted thru the wood,
and would eyeball a piece of wood here and there..
Mostly we'd find pieces' of wood for the gardens..

But love looking over the wood to see what we can/could find...

That wood has such a pretty grain to it - what kind is it?

That's alright, someone may have thought I was being rhetorical with my thread title.

Weezie; the wood needs to dry to a 16% moisture content before it will remain stable enough to work with, most of the shrinkage is done by then, after that it shouldn't take more than a couple hours using power and hand tools.

My dad is making them though, I am just providing the wood in a size he can work with, turning 80 next month, says it's time to slow down a little, oughta see his garden and fruit trees.

I'll see him in the spring sometime, to give him the wood, if I go up after the frost period for him I'll see what's growing. He has some old pics from when I was a sprout, maybe scanning them would work.
