Every time I start seeds, the soil always crusts and goes hard at the top...why? I've never been able to successfully sprout anything

What kind of soil are you using??

are you keeping it evenly and constantly moist??

just some misting every day or so should do it...the crusting is probably because the soil is drying out...

I'm using potting soil, and on the back it says to mist every day lightly to start seeds

Kenny,
Try adding a little peat--it helps retain moisture. I always add it and my soil never gets crusty on top. I mix about 1 part peat to 3 parts potting soil. You should be able to find small bags of it at Wal Mart.

Yeah - and compost helps.

Your hardening is probably clay.

I couldn't figure this out, then last year I spread mulch on a slope that was dumping clay into my fence garden every time it rained.

I also put some bricks in there - the mulch and bricks prevented it from going into my planting area.

I'll probably have to work on it again this year.

Peat moss is good for building up the soil and improving it.

Try planting seeds in a little shade..Maybe too hot .

Put a plastic bag over the wet area ..helps.
