Hi to everyone! I am not completely brand new to gardening, but have really bitten off too much recently and will need lots of experience to pull me through!

I have always worked a small vegetable and herb garden, always just enough to keep me busy on weekends! This year we have moved to a large 20 acre farm, and the garden (of about a 1/2 acre) was so nicely plowed for me by our closest neighbor as a goodwill gesture, and I haven't the heart to tell him I have no idea what to do with this much land! Duh

I am going from a small fenced-in garden of a hundred feet to this huge tract of land, and just today I broke my first cultivator on my first row  . I have all day every day now to make this work, and look forward to gleaning information from everyone!

With thanks,

heather

Hi Heather. I have the answer to your half acre garden - grow weeds. I've been doing just that for years and it requires no effort at all. laugh laugh

Seriously, welcome. You will always find someone to help with an idea on the forums here. (Usually better than my weeds idea dev )

laugh yeah- for a few years they grew alfalfa hay here, and I like to tell myself if nothing else I can grow hay!

for a lot of you, this may not be that big of a garden- for me, it's a lot different from the small raised beds I've always had- I don't even understand how to make a row by hand! (and remember, no power tools)

And I so need to make this work- our family is dependant on this garden as a food source this year, and this past year's food lasted less than the full winter (who would've thunk we could eat 100 pints of tomatoes?)
thanks for the laugh!

Hey Heather,
A half acre is a lot of garden to keep up with. Anyone who doesn't think it's much has never had one that size (mine was 1/2 acre when I lived in Little Rock). I don't have one that big now (wish I did) but it's still a lot of work. If you want lots of food to put up from your garden, do you do a spring and fall garden? You can get sooo much more out of it that way. And any problems you run into along the way with your garden, just run to your computer and post to us--someone will help you out!
