Hello all,

I am new here and hope to learn many new things. I have experience with gardening, as my grandmother would use me as a child to till, sow, weed, harvest, and more. LOL. But now, I am rusty. I can remember the basics that she taught me, but I have just purchased a home with a LOVELY backyard blank slate. What I would like to do is divide my yard into seasons. But I'm not sure what flowers/plants do well in my region.

Can someone help me out here?

Thanks
Curious Nick

Hey Nick
Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of interesting information, people, and answers to questions. You look like you are in zone 3 so should be able to have a lovely garden. You might try looking in the plants, shrubs, or landscaping section for suggestions or to post questions. Have fun and hope you see you around the forum.

Hi Curious Nick from another New Yorker!

Not to contradict Bev, but I did a search and it showed that you are in hardiness zone 6. The reason I searched, was that I spent my last 2 years of college at the University of Rochester, and I didn't think it was that cold there!

Funny thing is... my last year in Rochester was the year you were apparently born, Nick! laugh
WOW, does that ever make me feel old!!! eek :p thumbup

POTS and everyone, thanks for the warm welcome. My #1 love is a soft green lawn. I am a sucker for a lush lawn. I want to be able to wake up at 6:00am and walk out back barefoot for a sunrise breakfast.

After the lawn, being a Rochesterian, my next love would be Lilacs/Roses equally. If you all have never been here for our annual Lilac Festival or the Maplewood Rose Festival, you owe it to yourselves to come and enjoy a wonderful time.

My favorite tree would have to be the dwarf Japanese Maple, and I am determined to have one in my backyard.

I've kinda laid out what I want to do to my new backyard under Gardeners Chat. Quickly, I want to divide it into the 4 seasons, with my patio in the middle of the yard so we can see them all, whenever.

Contradict me any time you want, especially when I'm wrong - my eyes crossed trying to read the map and zone 3 didn't even make sense to me. Lilacs there should be gorgeous, I really miss lilacs.
