I have it bad!!!

I have a Mini-Greenhouse I built last year, and I already have it loaded up.

I am about to go crazy waiting for the ice to melt, so I can get to planting.

I think I need to go to GA (Gardeners Anonymous)

I need to TILL something!!!!

I've been so slow this year it isn't funny.

I haven't planted anything for this season yet. Althought I do have a few tentitive plans sitting out on my dinningroom table taking up space.

But for right now I'm just happy to sit here and watch the snow fall.

I'm going all out on my veggie garden this year... a few months ago, i increased the space, and added compost. And that was only for the fall! i'm doing a lot..

I have a question-- when should i start my veggie seeds indoors? -- 2-3 weeks before I'm going to plant them outside? I'm in zone 6...

My last freeze date is April 1st, read the seed pachages and it will tell you when.

My little greenhouse is about 3 feet tall inside so I can grow them a little bigger.

Pat, I know this is a stupid question, but...

I have had a little greenhouse (about 3 feet tall, too) for about five years. I haven't really figured out how to use it properly yet, though...

Could you explain the finer points to me? Do I sit it outside or inside? What if it is really cold outside? Do I keep the thing zippered up all the time?

I am ready as well. Actually planning on starting a few peppers this week.

I have sand in the bottom and under the sand is a waterbed heater (set to 70*), I also have a small room heater in there (set for about 50*), and this year I added a humidifier that is plugged into a small timer.

I have a battery powered Temp/Humidity (with a Min/Max reading) gage inside hanging from a screw to check the temps and humidity levels.

Mine is made from plywood, with a storm door as the lid.

So far the temps have been from about 46* to around 85*, and humidity runs from around 45% to over 85%.

When it starts warming up I slid the window in the door up a little.

Counting the heaters, humidifier, and everything, I have less $100 in the whole thing.

I forgot to plant pepper seed, I will do that next weekend. I may also start some tomatoes.

Do I put this thing outside or in? Do I leave it zippered up and open it when it is warm outside? Do I need to make a sand box to go under it? I hate the thought of wasting something I could be using...

I like your greenhouse. It looks and sounds a lot more complicated than mine should be, though...

you dont have to start the seeds indoors before tour last frost date, it just helps ya get a better start on em,
if you start them out doors after your frost date then you only loose a few weeks growing of time.

i only start mine indoors cause my last frost date is may10 and i cant wait that long to plant!

I wasn't sure how it would work either, I bought the thermometer at Walmart, (about $10) and check the temp everyday. It runs about 20* warmer inside compared to outside. We have had some low 20* nights here already and lots of ice, and it stayed above 45* the whole time.

I added the bricks and sand to the bottom so retain heat better. The little electric heater takes the chill out of the air. It has blower so the plants get used to the wind.

I say just try it, buy a thermometer and check it everyday. The real trick is trying it keep it from getting to hot. I leave for work at 5:30 and don't get home until 3:00. I go out in the morning before I leave and slid the window glass up a little if I think it will be to hot, and go out at night and shut it down.

I have the thermometer hanging from a nail in the very top so I can check the hottest spot.

I looked at the plastic ones and didn't really like them. I had most of the material to build this one.

Try it and keep some records of what it is doing, and adjust what needs to be adjusted.

I will try to get some pictures of this years seedlings.

Our last frost date is May 15......

I have new tomatoes 2 inches tall started last week......We need all the help we can get in zone 5............

However I have green tomatoes on the plants I planted in september.
Peppers I planted last week..

Dianna...your's should be used indoors, the plastic cover will keep humidity levels up indoors.

I also have the gardening disease, I will not be starting anything until Mid March. And any tilling here will have to wait until the ground drys out...It is a muddy mess we have had rain and more rain when everyone else had frozen stuff. My ground has been muddy or to wet to till every since late fall. Kind of hard to get ready when it is too muddy.

you can start them a week or two afer your last frost date outside
but if you want maximum growing time start them a week or two BEFORE your last frost date indoors
