I am always looking for different things to knit.
Not anything that is too complicated - not up to that yet! Duh )

Hopefully it will fit Nikki and her hands will be warmer while she plays her clarinet.

Here we go again, Thorny! laugh Duh

Did "we" not learn the last time to say "pretty please"??? wink thumbup

Besides, it's so ridiculously easy, you'll laugh when you read the directions. All you do is cast on about 30 stitches and knit 8 inches. The pattern says to knit each row - I did it in stockinette - knit 1 row, pearl 1, and so on...

Then you sew up the sides, leaving a space for the thumb to go through.
That's it!!!

But... be very careful about the gage of your yarn and how tightly you knit or crochet - as I said... the first one I made, which was 30 stitches was so very small and way too tight. The second one, was also 30 stitches and fits me just fine! Different yarns, same size needles.

I LOVE those Lynne. Gonna crochet myself up a pair and see how it goes. If it works out, I will make a bunch fo sets for my nieces! Thanks for sharing this one!

If anyone makes some, would you please post pictures here so we can all share your talent? I love seeing how the same pattern can be interpreted differently by each of us - different yarns, stitches, etc.

By the way... it fits Nikki like a glove! laugh Duh perpl

(sorry - couldn't resist! laugh wink )

Good deal Lynne. I WAS going to start some today but never made it that far. May try and get to them tonight. I cannot wait to see hwo they work out in crochet.
Posted By: Triss Re: my latest... - October 24th, 2006 at 03:59 AM
Lynne, I made the wristlets for Lys on our trip this weekend. They took me about an hour. Lys had already left for school today so Jonny modeled them for me.

Those came out great, Triss!
Thanks for sharing the picture!
I guess crocheting goes much faster than knitting, though it does look like you used heavier yarn and larger stitches. Either way works! They do look very toasty warm!

Hate to say it, but they look like casts, don't they? laugh Duh
Posted By: Triss Re: my latest... - October 24th, 2006 at 04:16 AM
They sure do but Lys sure likes hers. I did a chain of 31 and then 10 rows of what I call Double crochet. I dunno if that is what the stitch actually is since I never learned by pattern. I was also in the car with the kids watching a movies so I had the time all to myself with no real distractions.
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - October 24th, 2006 at 04:26 AM
Whay kind of yarn did you use?
Posted By: Triss Re: my latest... - October 24th, 2006 at 04:45 AM
It is Red Heart Plush. A meduim weight (4) yarn that is very soft and lightweight. Dark Purple is the color. I need to get a better pic when Lys gets home.
Posted By: penny in ontario Re: my latest... - October 24th, 2006 at 05:28 AM
But what a warm and comfy cast!!!!

Wow, that is cool Lynne and triss, wish I knew how to do that, Very neat:-)
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - January 5th, 2007 at 12:18 PM
I mentioned that I was crocheting a hat for Amy last weekend. It was the first time for me, and we wanted it to be lightweight - not a heavy winter type hat - so I got some cotton yarn. The brand is called Sugar and Cream, and it felt like I was using string. It had no give to it at all, and my hands tired from using it. I'm not sure that I'd use it again, but they have so many pretty colors.

Isn't he cute? I made him for Amy.

That is so cute Lynne...
You could do some in the birds' actual colors
like a bluejay and/or cardinal and put them
amongst your potted plants... cool
Posted By: Wrennie Re: my latest... - February 2nd, 2007 at 01:09 PM
Lynne go to crochetville lots of cute ideas there.

A week or so ago a lady came in my store. I was knitting. She said the 'fingerless mittens' are popular now. (I think she sells at church bazaars??}They are great for people whose hands get too cold in their air conditioned offices etc too!
laugh They do look like casts tho' laugh
I may have to do a version with less on the wrist, more for just the hand....
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - February 2nd, 2007 at 01:14 PM
Wrennie - that is where I got this bird pattern from - there is a bee pattern on the same page.

I know the fingerless mittens are "supposed" to be popular now, but I've yet to actually SEE anyone wearing them around here! Not in NYC when we've been recently either. Even though I've seen tons in knitters' and crocheters' journals and blogs...

Weezie - I do plan on making others in true bird colors - I made this one green, since that's Amy's current favorite color - she loved it!

Thanks all!

pssssssssst Patty - if you look at the first birdie post, I wrote that he's 2 1/2 inches tall. Not sure where you'd put one on a stocking cap though? But it would make a cute ornament!
Posted By: Patty S Re: my latest... - February 3rd, 2007 at 12:34 AM
pssssssssst Lynne - since before I first learned to read, I've relied on pictures! p I figured that if you thought it was important for people to know how big (or little) it was, you'd have laid a nickle next to it when you took the pic! grinnnn

Do you mean to tell me that you've never seen a tassle on top of a stocking cap? shk (Seems to be a little kid thing... regular adults don't go for them so much.) laugh

i love it lynne. wish i had that kind of patience!
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - February 4th, 2007 at 05:20 AM
Thanks Jiffy!

So... I found out that this type of small crocheted or knitted animal is called "amigurumi", and there are lots of talented people on the internet with wonderful instructions and pictures of items they've made.

I just had to make one of these turtles today!
He's only 1 3/4 inches high, and about 4 inches long. I must say that my hands hurt after doing this one, but that won't stop me from making others!!!

Nice job, Lynne! What's next?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: my latest... - February 4th, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Lynne, wavey
Great Stuff!!! No way could my fingers handle the tiny maneuvering required. And then there are my eyes... Making tiny things like you would make me bugaboo.

I like how that verigated green yarn popped up again wink

I have not picked an Idol Project... I have not been able to get interested in Idol either wink

I'm practicing Aran stitches. So far, I don't like how it's going.

I'm with whoever said it would be cool if you make birds in real bird colors. Cardinals have orange/red beaks wink I have lots of bird pictures if you need them wink wink
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - February 4th, 2007 at 05:42 PM
Thanks Patty and Jane!

Jane - I figured I had to use that green yarn again, since some turtles have green, plus it's Amy's favorite color.

Like you, I do think these small projects are better done by the younger - it's amazing how many of these things some of them have done!

I, too, am a birdwatcher, and have a few really good books, but thanks for the offer of pictures. I found another, similar pattern for the birds, and will see about trying true colors. Red is not a favorite of mine, though I do love my cardinals!

You gave me a warm fuzzy when you mentioned aran stitches. My mom did quite a bit of that when I was younger. Lots of afghans and sweaters. What about yours do you not like how it's going? I haven't attempted any yet - don't know if I have the patience to...

Love the turtle Lynne!! Great job!

Here are my first 2 attempts at amirugumi together, for size comparison.
(rats - should have put a nickel in there for Patty!!!)

There is a woman at crochetville.org who is fantastic at thinking these up - she has a few free patterns posted there, and some for purchase on her own website - I hope she posts some more freebies soon!

This is an off topic thing..
But here's a neat little site I found for knitting that had some really cute things to make
for clothing...

Yep Wrennie - she does have really cute patterns!

Did you stuff your mouse with catnip?
I'm thinking of doing a few of those...
Posted By: Wrennie Re: my latest... - February 6th, 2007 at 02:31 PM
Thats actually how I started talking to her. I asked if it was ok to use her pattern add catnip and sell them. Only I use french knots for the eyes. Dont want kitty choking on a little bead eye.I put fiberfill and catnip. My kitties loved the 'trial' one I did.

Just finished sewing together my first knit lapblanket. It's perfect for placing over my lap while being on the computer here, and blocks all the drafts from under the desk - somehow the wire connections through the wall create a very cold draft.

I wish I had more of the center color - I really like this combination!

I think they do as far as blankets go. I did both of Vanessa's twin sized ones in what 4 months of on and off work, more off than on. I am about halfway done with Dan's lap blanket and have been working on it, again more off than on, for less than a month. For me and afghans that is fast work. For you it may seem a lot slower but I never do one thing straight from beginning to end.

I've updated my knitting journal with my latest project - a knitted, felted bowl. It's a long post with a bunch of pictures, so I won't copy it here, but if you are interested you can click on "Lynne's knitting journal" in my sig. line.

I'm having problems getting a clear shot of the finished bowl -
for some reason this camera simply will not take a clear shot of it - wonder why?
Posted By: weezie13 Re: my latest... - March 21st, 2007 at 01:22 AM
Lynne,
Is it that really cool lookin' bowl
that is your newest project?

Yes, Weezie - it's the bowl that's the latest - I felted it in the wash on Sunday, and it's still drying on the glass bowl - almost done!

Posted By: weezie13 Re: my latest... - March 22nd, 2007 at 12:54 AM
Okay, don't yell at me,
but what is the bowl for? Duh
And does it always retain that shape?
And how did you get it to stay there,
in that shape, starch? *beside's dryin'
it with the bowl on it*

I do love the color of that though!!!
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: my latest... - March 22nd, 2007 at 12:12 PM
uhhhhhhh - it was an interesting thing to make?
I enjoy making and felting items?
It's decorative?
It helped keep me from going out of my mind for a few moments???

When wool is felted, and dried on a shape, it usually keeps that shape. The yarn becomes like felt fabric, and is pretty strong. No starch or anything else is used.

It can be used to hold any number of things - use your imagination! wink thumbup
Posted By: Wrennie Re: my latest... - March 22nd, 2007 at 01:00 PM
Weezie, felted bowls or vases need a liner if they're to be water tight.
I think gardenias would look gorgeou in that bowl Lynne. Great job.
