Just to give you an idea of how big they are, here are some pictures of them playing tonight. They love to jump up on the couch and when they are there, it is really easy to see how big they are. The couch is the size that 3 people can sit on easily.

I've thought of having a malamute for awhile now (not till I have my own house and can afford an extra 10lbs of food a week!)
Are they energetic dogs? Do they need as much exercise as a husky? What would you say their best traight is?
Posted By: hisgal2 Re: More Puppy Pictures - March 16th, 2007 at 08:43 PM
The Malamute was bred for the same purpose as the husky, but for a different kind of us. The husky was bred for pulling light loads for long distances. The Malamute was bred for pulling heavier loads for short distances. The are energetic and have the pulling instinct in them from the start. We got the puppies at 8 weeks and from day one they pulled on their leashes as if pulling a sled. We have two runs in the back yard so that they can run as much as they want. They are not dogs that are good for sitting around a house while your at work...left to their own devices, they WILL get into trouble. ...and they do like to dig. laugh We have about 10 holes in the backyard right now. We love their kind personalities and they are very loving dogs. I just wanted to say that we do not have the standard size of Malamutes. There are some bred to be 'giant Malamutes' and they are larger (as the name says) than the standard ones. They are not even 6 mos old yet and already Kina weighes in at 66 pounds! (they went to the vet yesterday and were weighed) There are not many AKC breeders for the Malamutes in the US....I'm not sure about Canada. We had ours shipped to us from Nevada and Tennessee.

Loz, they are puppies until they are a year old.

They haven't started to shed yet. I mean, we find dog hair tumble weeds in the kitchen, but that's minor. We think they will start to 'blow out' in a couple of weeks when the weather is consistantly warm. We've only had 2 warm days soo far....and then got 12" of snow yesterday! laugh

They are just so big for being puppies still! laugh

What do they think of snow, do they like going out there in it?(We got about 8 inches yesterday so I sympathize) :p

I don't mind the snow at all....I happen to love it. It makes everything look nice and clean. The puppies love it also. When we get fresh snow, they will go out on their runs and stay outside and play for over an hour at a time. They jump in it and run in it and shove their noses through it and lay in it and everything. They look like 2 kids out there playing. Its really hard to get a good picture of them out there tho.....i will try.

thumbup I figured they'd love it! laugh

My little dog I used to have was about 14 inches tall or so, and one year we got a few feet of snow...he ran out and jumped in it and all you could see was him jumping around. laugh

I usually don't mind some snow but it's so close to spring and I had flip flops on a few days ago because it was 72 degrees!

Well, I knew that we'd end up with one more snow storm before we really got to see Spring come. laugh That's how it ALWAYS works!!!

Stephen said he was throwing the snow onto the puppies when he was shoveling the deck so that we could get to Sivu's run. laugh
