How to get rid of FRUIT FLIES??

Anyone with some helpful hints????

The only one I have is......

Once I get them flyin' around....
I will put in something they will flit on
or sit on...
like an cut open tomato or banana...
INSIDE A ZIPLOCK BAGGIE...
and leave it open over night...

they go in there get the feast of their lifetime,
and then I sneak up on them in the morning.....
and zip that darn bag closed... and they're stuck
inside the bag and they can't get out!!!!

My daughter did some science fair project on fruit flies when she was in high school. They were in bottles ( I can tell you the exact size of the bottoms because after the project she bleached them out and put them on the carpet in her bedroom and they left white rings on a burgandy carpet) Anyways, I know she had to "Put them under" while she studied them. She used alka seltzer to do it , and I know if she used too much it would kill them.

Here's a good way to get rid of those pesky fruit flies around the house without using harmful chemicals. You will need a spray bottle with an adjustable spray-head. fill the bottle with rubbing alcohol and adjust the spray head so that it sprays a fine mist. When you spray the fruit files, the rubbing alcohol will not kill them but it will knock them out so that they fall onto the floor where you can sweep them up. Doesn't work as good as insecticide, but then again, you won't be poisoning your family and yourself either.

i have heard you can take an old fast food drink cup and leave a bit of soda in it, then cut the straw about an inch or 2 long, place it in the straw hole where its barely sticking out. they go in for the sugar in the soda and cant get out. havent tried it yet though

That's a pretty cool trap Wizzard, I haven't heard of that one before. The method I've used was to take a bottle or bowl filled with a little juice or cider, cover it with saran wrap and poke tiny holes in the saran wrap with a pin. As stated above they seem to be able to smell their way in, but not back out. That doesn't seem to stop an infestation though.

the pet store in town has the non smell pest strips to han very cheaply priced, and i hang them for about two weeks and never see a fruit fly again,,, they are attacted to these yellow and white things,, and whatever is on them is great and they are long lasting too,, beth

I agree with beth saelens, the old fashioned fly strips still work well and you won't feel as much the murderer this way. Other than that, quit leaving fruit on the counter uncovered.

I used to work at a landfill, now we had a fly problem!!!

We would hang 3 or 4 fly strips in the compactor, and change them out every couple of hours.

The flys had to get an appointment to land on them.

My sister suggested to me (although I never used it, I had fungus gnats not fruit flies). Put a banana peel in the oven and leave it open over night. In the morning shut the door and cook them! I would suggest 350*

What you want to do is cut a hole either side of say a 2L soft drink bottle.
Next make a mixture of about 100ML of water with about half a teaspoon or more of either Vegemite,/Marmite/Promite with it.

Hang it around tomatoes, orange trees etc. and around the yard you will be surprised at how many you catch.
