Wonder Egg :-) part II
I thought everyone was keeping such good
track of our Wonder Egg Plants,
I'd keep the thread going!!!!
Here\'s the original Wonder Egg So, keep us posted on how they're doing,
Or not!
Weezie
i'm so glad you stared this again. i meant to, but got booted after i locked the first one, then with the pooch and everything else...
and my egg is a NOT.
i have enough seeds to try one more time. but i am not going to until i have all my other seedlings taken care of.
I keep saying I'm going to start mine,
and want the kids to help with the jiffy pot,
*watch it* and we all get side tracked by something, but I'm going to have to start mine
sooooooon, or I'm going to have "frozen wonder eggs"
I've been busy sifting compost, and sifting more compost and even more compost!!
Weezie
went to wal-mart saturday and LOW AND BEHOLD I FOUND A WONDER EGG PLANT KIT
it came with some kind of super quick growing cherry tomato(i have never done tomatos from seed before) i love the little egg shaped "greenhouse" to start the seeds in
since the plant is in the eggplant family are the
"eggs" edible? or just ornamental?
I just bought 1 too. They had them marked down to $1.00! LOL
Gardencrazy
I didn't think they would still have them out now that easter is over! and I really didn't know they would be marked down to a dollar! I'm going to walmart tomorrow so i'll have to check that out!! and pheonix people have said different things about it being edible. Some say it is and some say that it isn't. me personally? I would not eat it. I've read that it's got a bitter taste to it.
Well, another one bites the dust!
I forgot to water it and it is dried out.
I have 3 more seeds, though, so I will try, try again.
Dianna
ok - this is my second attempt at writing this - the first time was lost when I entered it!
WOW!!! I cannot believe how many posts there are on this topic! I am happy to report that the seeds that were questionable from last year's plant are now starting to germinate!
I planted some on the top of the soil of the plant I was able to overwinter, and this morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that about 5-6 seeds have popped their bright green heads out of the soil!
away from this pot, all will be well. I don't have anymore window space in rooms where I can close the doors, and yesterday she got into a few trays of 4 inch seedlings while chasing a yellow jack in the window, and knocked the peat pellets out and onto the floor, breaking several of the 4 inch high seedling stems of my cardinal flower vines - they were already on to their 2nd true leaves too!
She is definitely in the doghouse now!
How are everyone else's wonder eggs doing?
Can't wait to see everyone's pictures...
well i dont see anything but dirt still, but i just planted on saturday oh no i'm sorry it was on sunday wait no it was saturday
Phoenix ~ I meant to say that it took a couple of weeks before I saw anything this morning, so don't be discouraged yet - you've got time yet!
well mine have done diddly squat so far but I just planted them like 5 days ago (on april 15th). I planted some outside a couple of weeks ago and they have done absolutely nothing. hopefully they do something soon! oh and I went to walmart today and asked if they had peat pellets (the ones you put in water and they get bigger) and they were sold out! the lady said they were very popular and they didn't have any more...oh well
Miss Jamie,
I was just in Wally~World today looking for those
jiffy pot pellets too!!!
Twernt
any :p !!!
Figures, I wanted a few more for my kids to watch and plant in... Next year I'll have to start earlier I guess!!!
Weezie
i can go to the wal-mart neaqr me and see if there are any left and maybe i can get some and send them out to y'all that need
Yep, like Lynne said they take a few weeks to pop up--I checked mine all the time before they sprouted and I was beginning to wonder if they were duds.....they're getting taller now but seem to be pretty slow growing, but they look healthy.
And my walmart has the egg kits for 2 for 5 dollars now on clearnace......not as good as a buck, but better than paying full price.
well mine are still doing squat but I still have hope lol. pheonix you are a dear!! if you want to you can and I'd be more than happy to pay postage for some! thanks so much! I'm gonna try walmart again next time. oh I wish they could put some on hold for me!! lol good luck on everybody's wonder eggs!
This is the 2nd try, and I'm out of seeds.. so I hope at least one of these make it.
Meg
Looking really good, Meg!
wow! those look great! mine aren't doing anything...hopefully they will any day now! I planted them on the 15th of this month.
well, as of last night, mine were still doing squat. then.... this morning, i go out to get something out of the car, and WOW a set of leaves. only one set, and not "true" leaves, but that jiffy pellet had been sitting there, in my starting tray for weeks! in fact, i gave up on the original seeds i put in it and put some more
so now, i don't know which set is the set that germinatied!
but, if i get one plant out of it, i'll be happy. so now, i have most of what i have planted up and running.
I HAVE PROGRESS!!!yay!!!! I took a peek-a-boo at them earlier and only 1 of them is barely popping up outta the soil!! thank goodness! I have 5 little peat pellets that I got at big lots (these are a bit smaller than the regular ones) so I'm REALLY glad one's coming up!
OK -
since my questionable seeds from last year have had a high germination rate
,
I do have some that I can spare.
There are probably enough seeds for maybe 8 packs of more than you got
in the wonder egg at WalMart - I could probably do about 15 seeds in each.
If anyone is interested in doing a SASE with bubble wrap for these, or if you have some seeds to trade for them, please PM me.
wow that's a great offer! I might have to take you up on it if (knock on wood) these that I have now don't do anything. they seem to be doing ok right now atleast one of them does anyway but for some odd reason when I looked earlier at it I saw that the sprout was up and outta the soil (finally!!) and the seed is for some reason up on top of the sprout? where the leaves are supposed to open?? what should I do just pick the seed off or just leave it alone? does anybody know why it did that?
Miss Jamie ~
What you are seeing is the seed SHELL. I would leave it alone - it will fall off by itself as the plant grows. I have this on all my seedlings, and am always tempted to pull it off, but experience has taught me that sometimes you also pull the entire seedling out of the soil, or worse yet, sometimes the top of the seedling breaks off.
oh ok duh on me!! lol thanks for the info! I think I'll leave it alone :-)
I thought I was in the clear.. but I put them out today for thier daily dose of sun & breeze, and of course, it was only in the 40's. They were only out there a couple of hours when kiddo stated it was starting to rain some, & also, the wind blew the door open. Soooooo, I am thinking, gosh, I better bring them in before they blow away..
They didn't like the chilly temps. They shriveled up.
Meg
Meg ~ see my post above about seeds available if you like...
Meg,
They didn't like the chilly temps. They shriveled up.
<img border="0" alt="[tongue]" title="" src="graemlins/tongue.gif" />
<img border="0" alt="[tongue]" title="" src="graemlins/tongue.gif" />
<img border="0" alt="[tongue]" title="" src="graemlins/tongue.gif" />
Lynne, thank you.. I may take you up on that.
Weezie, I know.
They weren't even out that long today. They've been enjoying thier daily dose of fresh air & sunshine.. but there's a bit TOO MUCH COLD AIR & not enough sunshine today I guess. *sigh* So far, I brought them in earlier today, and put all my plants back under thier lamps.. and seem to be responding. The leaves are still a bit curled on the ends.. but they are standing up again.
Meg
Meg,
but they are standing up again
Weezie
wow that's great that they are back up! ok gang let's cross everything <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> and hope that they make it through this time and meg! don't ever do that again to them babies!
lol
yahooooo!!!
wonder egg seedlings have sprouted thru the dirt i've got three of them
(and 1 tomato
)
i'm so excited and very happy i was able to find the kit.
i just wish my mandrake and belladonna would sprout
hi everybody! I've had 3 more sprouts since the last time I posted on this topic so I'm doing very well right now :-) so now I have 4 sprouts! on the tops of 3 of them the shells from the seeds but hopefully they'll be ok! so how are everybody else's doing?
I just planted mine today..
We got an extra Jiffy Pot too, so one egg has 3 Jiffy Pots in it and one only has two...
And I went and bought some other Jiffy Pots and put the other seeds in those, couldn't bring myself to be double planting the seeds and then having to snip one if they do sprout!!!
5~14 days to wait now..
Oh Geeeesh, the suspense is already k*llin' me...
Weezie
hi all!! my wonder eggs are doing TERRIFIC!! (knock on wood
) I now have 5 seedlings and this time I didn't put them in the plastic egg green house thingie :-) so hopefully that'll help with the mold and hopefully this time I won't get mold on them!! I was in my room looking for something yesterday and looked under my desk and there I found a pack of 25 jiffy pellets!! yay!!!
keep us informed on how they're doing
thanks pheonix :-) I think I'm going to keep mine in a pot outside but I'm not sure yet
I guess we'll find out when it happens
hope yours keep doing ok :-)
well, i have 2 sprouts that have made it a week now...
So glad to hear that everyone's seedlings are coming along nicely now!
Definitely grow them outdoors in full sun, once they are established, but be sure to acclimate them to the sun slowly first - a few hours for the first few days, with indirect sun the rest of the day. They need the full sun for the flowers to grow.
Have fun! Lynne
ok great thanks! and do I just put the entire peat pellet into the dirt or do I take the mesh from around the pellet and then plant? thanks!
I like to EVER-SO-CAREFULLY peel the mesh away from the pellet. I find that the roots can expand better when not bound by the mesh which never really seems to disintegrate. Some people say that by peeling it away you are disturbing the roots, but I haven't had that happen.
yea that's what I was thinking too...I hope I don't hurt them!! lol
so how's everybody's wonder eggs doing? mine are doing good they aren't dead yet lol
miss jamie,
i have 4 or 5 of them still in the peat/net pot. 1 of them has some true leaves developing on it so i think its time to transplant(ya think
yeap i'd say that it's time to transplant it lol
but what i'd do is when transplanting it try to be careful and take the mesh plastic thingy from around it because it may smother it or strangle the plant that's a great idea to give them to people for mother's day
Got the first real set of leaves on mine today.
The other day I finally decided to pinch off the second larger plant that was growing right next to the largest one. Well, I wanted to see what would happen if I kept what I pinched off in a small container of water...maybe it would grow roots?? So, I filled a shot glass half full of water and stuck it in there. Today I looked at it....its still alive...and it looks like there are 2 tiny roots growing out of the bottom of the stem!! Cool! My first......ummm.....transplant!
well I think mine are dying :-( wonder what I'm doing wrong??
the one that I pinched off and stuck in the shot glass looks better than the one that I left to grow in the jiffy pot. It isn't shribbling up, but its not standing up straight....it looks tired! It just got it's 3rd new leaf.....it's about 2 inches tall....is it time to plant into a pot with some miracle grow, do you think????? Help!! Quick!!
awww...sorry about that Jaime.
The one that wasn't really looking all that great is just fine today. Lastnight it was still droopy. I think I gave it too much water. The one in the shot glass is doing surprisingly well. I expected it to be dead by now...but its doing well also! I'll have to take a picture for you to see.
I cut the netting away from around mine(very carefully), and planted it in my big teacup planter out on the back porch.....I only started 2 of them, and I cut one of them down because they were too close together......the one I have left growing is looking good, and getting a little bigger......I'm excited!
Today the one that is still in the dirt was droopy again. Turns out that now the dirt was DRY! Man! I just can't win with this thing!!! The one that I plucked and then put in the shot glass is still doing great! The roots are getting longer! Should I put it in a little pot with some miracle grow potting soil yet?? I've never made something grow roots like this before...I don't know what I'm doing! Also, is it too soon to put the other one into the potting soil and in a small pot??? Its just a couple inches tall and has 3...maybe 4 real leaves.
Well, the little one in the little soilpot is official dead. It flat-lined yesterday. The one that is in the shot glass is doing superb. When do I put it in soil??? How many roots should there be? I'll take a picture so you all can see. I just need advice because I've never managed to make something grow roots like this.
wow that looks great! I don't know what to tell you though
if I were you though I'd let it sit in the water like you've been doing to try and let it grow more roots but I don't know what I'm talking about lol
I'm trying to grow them outside I planted the seeds a couple of days ago so wish me luck!!
cool...definatly keep me posted on that!
I just had to come back to this post
to see how's everyone's plants/seeds were doing??
I also came back to it to see when
I actually posted when I started my seeds...
posted April 26, 2005 08:58 PM
---------------------------------
I just planted mine today
Goodddddddddd gravy, mine are just now sprouting.
How long does it actually take those poor seeds to growwwwwwwwww???
Geesh!!!
I think I have 3..
*and only one tomato...*
go figure, when I started them, it had a cold snap, down into the freezing mark....
so, they layed dormant all that time I guess...
Go figure...
Weezie
well when I started my first ones inside the house it took maybe about a week or week and a half for them to sprout...the one's outside aren't doing a dang thing :-( but it hasn't been a long time yet though hopefully this rain we're getting will help them grow :-) I do have a pumpking seedling growing :-) I'm so excited about that! and zinnias too!!
Well, I finally put one into a pot-
Ok, so it's not so big, but I thought I would give it some confidence if I put it in a nice pot.
Meg
Meg - that one looks great - really green and healthy!
hmmm for some reason mine look different than that? I don't know why! I'll try to get a pic of what mine look like tomorrow. mine are tiny though so maybe they haven't had time enough to get big enough :-) that looks great megan! I started mine outside this time in little clear drinking cups and they seem to be doing excellent!
My plant is getting pretty big......I should go out and take a picture of it to post in here....the leaves are humungous......I get a little thrill(yes my life is sad--LOL) everytime I look at it and it's grown a little.....can't wait for it to start putting out "eggs" eventually.......
I think out of all the seeds I started,
*10 maybe...* I got one I think...
Lot's of the Tiny~Tim Tomatoes though..
(I think that tells me something,
stick with the tomatoes and leave the
plants that grow "EGGS" alone!!!)
I've got a few coming up too. Maybe 8 inches tall. Is it too late for them to bloom?
ok here's what my wonder egg seedlings look like...I started them outside this time...it's not a very good pic so I'll try to get a better one tomorrow if I can...
Sheri, I had to start mine over 3 times (and I'm on my last ones now, so here's hopin!), and the one I posted that I just put in a pot, is one of 2 that lived. They are both the same size now, and only about maybe 2" tall. I hope it's not too late for them!
Meg
I'm lucky if mine is an inch tall...
Sheri and Meg - it's not too late to bloom - they usually don't do this til mid to late July for me anyway.
I am surprised that my seedlings are still only about an inch tall also, Weezie! They have been outside in the hot and damp weather for the past few weeks and should be loving that. Don't know what's up with them this year?!?
Mine was planted how many weeeeeeeeeks ago too!!
I am amazed it's soooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwww
growing...
My pumpkins and tomatoes, and cuke's and you name it were all planted weeeeeeeeeeeks after them
and are leaps and bounds bigger than they are...
P.S. Just went back again and looked when I
planted them, April 26, 2005.
I know - me too!
I just looked at them, and even the 2 stems that I was able to overwinter indoors are not showing ANY growth on them yet. They seem to be just in limbo out there - very strange!!!
Have you put any "juice" on them??
Fertilizers, or potting soil with ferts,
or compost tea or foliar sprays?
I haven't gotten to doing anything to mine yet,
kinda afraid to, being it's the ONLY ONE!!!
But somethings' gotta start, or it'll be just getting something when winter's flyin'!!!
True, Weezie - I did water them once with blossom booster, but nothing since. But you're right - they are sitting in the soil from last summer, so they probably need rejuvinating!
Here's my wonder egg plant in my teacup planter that I bought in Kirklands......it's coming along rather nice......
WOWWWWWWWWW!
Mine's one/millionith~tenth of that!!!
Geessssh!!!
Wow WOW WOW!!!! That's so healthy looking, Loz!!!
Mine has slightly different shaped leaves. Will be interesting to compare them later on in the summer.
I cheated a little.....I put it outside way early when it was still coldish....and at night I covered it up with half of the plastic egg thing that came in the kit.....So it's been getting lots of sun for quite a while--I thought the cold might kill it but took a chance because I just didn't have anywhere to keep it in the house with the kitchen remodel going on. And I didn't use any miracle grow on it either.....that's just from being outside in good sunlight for a while.
They are slow growers to begin with, but then they hit a point where they just start to take off.....there for a while mine looked like it was getting bigger almost everyday......
Wow Loz!! That is amazing looking! I just got home a bit ago, and mine still looks pretty much the same, tho maybe a teensy bit taller.
Meg
Mine is like MAYBE 2 inches tall. I've been giving it miracle grow once every couple of weeks...its 7 1/2 weeks old. Maybe I need to put it outside now. I just don't know what to do with it!!! ...how to get it to grow!
Jenn get it outside in the sun now if you can.....mine was teeny tiny when I first put it in that planter.......I think that will really make yours grow a lot faster if they are out in the sun. I think that it's best to put it in a planter if you can.....a lot of seedlings I planted out in the garden flopped over and died....but that has really flourished in that pot.....I kept it on the back porch where it got sun all morning, and shade during the hottest part of the day, but I just moved it out into full sun.
And Miss Jamie, yours will grow....like I said before I think they are slow starters then they seem to hit a point where they really take off!
I had mine IN the greenhouse,
couldn't have gotten any much more sun
than it did!!!
I repotted it today...
See if that gives it a jump start!!!
well I took a peekaboo today and mine are starting their 2nd leaves...yay!!!
Well... mine have been out in full day sun for several weeks now, and they are limping along. The larger 2 stalks are the ones that wintered over indoors, and the rest of the green are the seedlings.
Ha, your seedling leaves are bigger than mine!!! :p
well y'all are never going to believe this. well maybe you will considering it's me that this happend to. what i thought was a egg tree turned out to be the tomato that came with it,and the egg tree seedlings which i thought were the tomatos are now actually coming along nicely.
i thought i was doing real good with the wonder egg then lone day i was looking at the leaves and noticed that they smelled like a tomato plant.
i dont know if the seed packets were mixed up or if i was. but all is ok now that i know which is which
oh yeah more than likely it was me that was "mixed" up. just glad i know which is which. i have 2 egg tree seedlings (i'm assuming) that are doing real good i have them in one of my big plant boxes. as soon as it stops raining i'm going to go out and put them in pots of thier own.
the funny thing is i gave what i thought was an egg tree to a friend of mine. cant wait to get her reaction when tomatos grow instead of eggs. she will think i'm nuts (she'll be right)
these are my wonder egg plants.
That is soooo interesting, Sheri - my wonder egg plants have never looked like that! Yours look very healthy, just different. Mine grow on single upright stems (see picture above), rather than growing out of a center point on the bottom.
Can't wait til everyone starts getting eggs so we can compare!
I was kinda thinking the same thing, Weezie...
Unless cone flowers have volunteered in the spot where I marked that I put out the wonder egg....I put out 2 packs and that's all that's coming up there.
Keep us posted Sheri!!!
I really am wonderin' now..
How close are the Coneflowers you have
already???
Ya know, if you look at the leaf shapes and compare them, they are very similiar.
Ok Loz, I put the little thing into a pot and stiuck it on the back porch where it will get morning sun. Here's hoping!
Ya know, if you look at the leaf shapes and compare them, they are very similiar.
Very true, Jenn
Hey that's great Jenn....they should start taking off soon!
Mines grown a bit more just since I took that last picture.....Can't wait for it to hatch some eggs so I can show my niece....she'll think it's so cool......
Yeah, I'm with Lynne on this one...
The stems are totally different,
Lynne's is on one stem, out of the ground
and then as the leaves appear they grow
out from a stem...
The one Sheri posted, the leaves are coming out
of the ground/basal area....
And the shape of the leaves, to my eyeballs
isn't exactly the same....
The one Sheri has is too elongated, even the babies come out pointy, where as the other is more rounded...
And the veining in the leaves are different to me.
And leaf texture isn't the same.. the one Loz and Lynne have, even though are veiny, they appear to be smooth... where as Sheri's seems rough or bumby or textured!!!!
Go back to Loz's picture on pg 5, and that's how mine is..
JUST SMALLLLLLLLLLLER :p
:p
I don't have any coneflowers this year. Last year I had 2 plants in another area. I guess it's possible. I've had not planted flowers pop up before. It's interesting that these are coming up where I have the marker for wonder egg.
I wonder what they are???? They do look awfully different than mine and Lynnes......It's a mystery plant, I have some of those myself....
Did you keep any of the wonderegg seeds Sheri, or did you plant them all????
I planted 2 packs and gave the others away.
I'm gonna start a part 3 :-)
