Last summer I posted pictures of my "wonder egg" plant which is a plant with fruit that really looks and feels like chicken eggs. I was only able to harvest a few seeds, so not enough to share.

I wanted to let you know that WalMart has Wonder Egg kits on sale this week for $4.96. It includes a bonus of Tiny Tim tomato seeds. I remember that they also sold these kits last year just before Easter. I believe the kit includes a plastic pot, some soil and the seeds.

My egg plants aren't a wonder at all. They always seem to kick the bucket before the egg is "laid"! My aunt has the same results that I do. I am glad that someone was able to show me what they are supposed to look like!

Hay all just though i would let you know these eggs are not to eat.i would hate to loose some of my garden friends.wallmart has them here there in the garden shop i just bought me one today it comes with four seeds and some tiny tim tomotos also four seeds and a littel spounge like pot you just add water then plant the seed. they sell for$4.96 a peace.

I got mine as well. I love it... the packaging was cracking me up because it's made for non-farmers like you wouldn't believe.... but the instructions are actually for a plant which is NOT suitable for beginners....

In other words, I should do fine but, the 8 year old who it's purchased for will not do fine. It's geared toward Easter.

i just got back from walmart and i just got one of those egg plant kits now i'm wondering something...it doesn't have any drainage holes in the bottom of the egg planter thingy so won't the plant be waterlogged?? thanks for helping a dumb blonde lol

i got one today too. i think the idea is that after it sprouts, you plant it in a different pot.

OK. I did some investigating. The plant is supposed to go into a 3 gallon pot once it's got it's first set of true leaves. It is apparently frost tender so you'll lose it in the winter if you don't bring it in. I live in LA so I'll probably plant it in the ground once it's large enough. By the way, I recommend snipping the netting off the peat pellet when you go to plant it in something bigger.

It needs full sun and blooms in late summer, early fall. The flowers are purple. It grows to 12" - 18" and should be spaced about a foot apart. Average watering needs. Do not overwater.

To harvest seeds, the fruit needs to be significantly overripe (I think I know what that means).

Also, here's the good news! You CAN eat them! But aparently it is REALLY not recommended because they're so damned bitter. I've found a number of sites saying that they're edible. The recommendation is to prepare them like you would eggplant.

So, they're not poisonous but they don't taste great.

Do you have any information on the wonder egg plant? I can't find anything on the Web except other people's questions about it. It is grown from a seed inside one of those plastic two-part eggs and has some sort of edible fruits on it. I have seen it sold in drugstores in the past.

The plant you're thinking of goes by the more formal name Solanum melongena and is a member of the eggplant family. The fruits, or "eggs," cannot be plucked and eaten -- they are very bitter. But you can prepare them in much the same way you would eggplants.

I bought one as a gift for a girlfriend and she was sooo depressed that the plant was only decorative. She kept saying in a lilting voice, "But I wanna eat 'em..."

She's totally thrilled now that I've found that link! And I am too... Because I wanna eat 'em!

ok, i'm going to find a link to a recipe that i have made using a very bitter relative of cucumbers called "bitter melon". it will work with your wonder eggs 'cause you can put egg plant in it.

and it tastes good and the bitterness is mostly gone...

if you fry it up like egg plant, you are in for a rude awakening unless you like alum water... i don't, but know folks who do!

It states specifically that both unripe and ripe fruits are edible. (Down at the bottom.) I keep checking because they are members of the Nightshade family. But then... so are tomatoes!!!

The purpose in growing these is to see the stunned look on friends and family when they see what looks and feels like "real" chicken eggs growing on a plant.

Hi my seeds came up today i had 12 seeds in my egg kit so i planted 2 in each of the 6 peat pellits so i should have at least a few to plant in my flower beds.think i am gonna tell all my friends that i have a mixed up rooster that cant tell a hen from a plant and that this is the result from it do you think they will buy that it should make for a good laugh i think.your friend in gardening.mike57

Jenn, I don't see why it wouldn't grow indoors if it has the proper light.

Yes Jen, it can be grown indoors. The instructions say to start your seeds in the little egg shaped greenhouse they give you with the seeds & a peat pellet. Put a couple of seeds into one peat disc. After they sprout and get about 2" high, thin to one strong seedling. Then you can removed the top of the greenhouse. Then at about 6" you can put it in a 6" or so sized pot. When it gets bigger, you can put it in a (I think) 3 gallon pot, and it can be grown indoors or out. It gets about 3' tall.

My pack came with about a dozen seeds.. I only started one peat disc, but I could do probably 3 more, easily.

How often do the egg-looking things come on it? If it's inside, would they be on all year round? Will this plant kill my cats if they decide to eat the leaves?

Hmm.. I doubt that you'll have any eggs on it for Easter.. since that is only 10 days away. But, they do change from white to yellow as they ripen.

As far as toxicity.. I don't know. Also, not sure on how long they live/bloom. I think I read that you can keep them indoors for awhile.. but they don't last forever.

Also, part of the eggplant family, tho not recommended for eating, as they are very bitter & nasty. More or less, ornamental.

I can't wait to start my wonder egg plant......I'd start it now, but I have better luck growing seeds outside in window type boxes and then transplanting them.....a lot of the seeds I grow indoors don't live.....and since there were only 4 seeds in the pack then I guess I'll wait.....

Lynne, I was thinking the same thing---that the quantity of the seeds wasn't fair...I only got four in mine, but I think some people are paying the same price I paid and getting 12....I wonder why they have the different amounts in them?

I just hope one of the four seeds takes....I'd feel a lot more confident with 12....but hey what can you do.....Really, I'm just happy to have found them at all.....I think that it will be quite the conversation piece....

Half the time the people in that section don't know where most of the stuff is...at least at my wallyworld....and the wonder egg kit was in a corner of the gardening section that usually doesn't have a lot of stuff...took me forever to find them in mine....

I got 6 seeds in my kit.They have all sprouted.

About an inch high.I'm gonna have to thin them soon.I was thinking of taking that little peat pot apart and planting them seperately.

hmmmm....some plants don't like that though.

I was at Walmart yesterday and was just wandering around and all of a sudden I saw a display with them!!! They didn't have them until just the other day (according to the lady I talked to). So, yesterday I planted the little seeds......6 in my packet. I can't wait!!!

yea how are everyone's wonder eggs doing? mine were doing great and then boom! here came the nasty yucky ugly white fuzzy mold! oh well i guess it was my fault because i left the top part of the egg on there :-( they were getting their 2nd sets of leaves too :-( ahh well i'll try to plant some more seeds tomorrow :-)wish me luck!

I lost mine. It was doing good.. getting 2nd set of leaves, or is that the 1st true set? I don't know.. anyways.. it wilted to nothing, and I don't know why. I think it was because I took it out of it's little greenhouse as was instructed. I touched it, so it died.. my deadly black thumb strikes again!

I lost 1/2 my veggies that had started too. So far, I have kept 3 of my 4 varieties of peppers, and I think that's it. The rest of the stuff I had started, all wilted. *sigh*

well the way i did mine was i did the whole jiffy disc thing (you know where you put the discs in some water and they get bigger?)and they were already wet so i then put the wonder egg seeds in the jiffy discs,1 seed in both,and then i wet a paper towel and i put it underneath the discs. 1 sprouted in about a week and it took maybe another week for the other to sprout. then about maybe 2 or 3 weeks later i noticed a white mold looking stuff on the jiffy discs so i thought maybe it would help to just wipe it off and they would live so i did and i checked the next day and i noticed the white stuff on them again and they were dead :-( so i just threw them away and i started some outside and they aren't doing anything so far so i'm just gonna try to put more inside and pray that they'll live this time. last time i think the problem was there was too much moisture and not enough air? i left the lid on and never took it off but it only had a couple of air holes in the top part of the egg so that's what i think happened...not enough air and too much moisture. so what i'm gonna do this time is replant them in some jiffy discs and then plant the seeds in them and place a wet paper towel under them and leave the lid on until they sprout. when they sprout i will take the lid off in the day and put it back on at night. hopefully they will survive this time! fingers,toes,legs,and eyes crossed! <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" />

I have a sprout! I saw it just lastnight, so I took the top off of the egg. I didn't water it, because the little jiffy disc wasn't light brown, which means that it was still moist. The directions say only to water it when it starts to get dry, so maybe your's is getting too much water with the wet paper towel?? The directions say to water just a little bit by putting a bit of water in the bottom of the egg and that's it. A nice sunny window or supplemental light and that's it.....so that's what I'm doing. Here's hoping!...as I also have the thumb of death!

I may have watered a little sooner than that, but it was never left to be saturated, or dried out. It just looked good one day, and the next it was wilted to nothing.

I'm just deadly with green stuff. They never had a chance.

I have 2 seeds sprouting up too Meg....I'm sooo exxcited about it....I hope that they continue to grow okay........I can't wait until I can get them outside.....

Today a second sprout popped up next to my larger one. Its literally right next to it. Should I pullit out? Will it crowd the larger one?? I don't really want to get rid of it! Is it too small to transplant into starter soil with no fertilizer??? Yesterday I watered the little jiffy pot....that was scarey! I was afraid that it would be dead when I looked at it today...but it seems to be ok!

Mine are kind of close too.......I know that with seeds they say to pick one that looks good, and then snip the ones that are too close to it with scissors....because if you pull it, it may disrupt the roots growing on the good one. I don't know though.....I haven't done that with mine yet.....I'm just letting them do their own thing.....There were so few seeds in the packet that I don't want to chop one down.....

I have two sprouts, too! I sure don't want to cut one out. Knowing my luck I would choose the one that was ready to die anyway. When do you put them in a pot? Or transplant them outside?

I looked at my sprouts today..........and they were wilted and hanging over the side of the jiffy pot. Upon further inspection, the pot was pretty dry....but didn't look light brown in color at all!!! So, I put some water into the pot (which it didn't even want to suck up!! ) and put it back to where I keep it. I'm sooooooooo sad! I hope they perk up...there actually is a 3rd sprout getting ready to pop up, so I hope that if the 2 larger ones don't make it, that this little baby one will. BZ and I planted these together!

Up until today, I was having the same problem as Loz...I just couldn't bring myself to cutting a sprout away because the packet came with so few seeds!...I guess that's not going to be much of a problem now, eh?

Well, if it's any concellation, I haven't even
planted mine yet....No room in my house, nor window/light space and the greenhouse isn't warm enough during the nights yet.

i replanted some today and let's just hope that they sprout and live this time cuz i only have like 2 seeds left! i planted some outside and they aren't doing anything yet! my picotee cleomes are doing GREAT so far though!!

They're alive!!! Literally 2 hours later and they're up and looking like nothing ever happend! Whew! Man, I like it when things like that happen!

One of my hyacinth vines was flopped over today from lack of water(oops-bad loz), I watered it and it popped right back up--sometimes we get lucky huh???

My little guy is probably 2-3 inches tall-he's doing ok, but some of his lower leaves are looking a little brown. I noticed tonight that the roots are starting to poke out of the bottom, so I guess it's time to pot on. How does a mix of compost & potting soil sound?
