Okay, here is the link to my kitchen makeover pics--including my wonderful hubby Mark(who usually wears contacts...lol)

Our kitchen is 10 by 12, and I think the DR is basically the same....so the end product will be a 10 by 22 foot eat in kitchen!!!!!! I'm so excited about it, but no so excited about the next step.....DRYWALL......talk about mess...that dust gets eveywhere.....things are coming along good, and we have ordered our cabinets.....A nice light maple.....we've picked out everything, from the faucets, light fixtures, dishwasher, etc.....

Check out the mess here---

loz\'s kitchen remodel.

I'll be adding more pics as the remodel progresses....just wanted to say too, that the kitchen really is that ugly. It was that way when we moved in.....flowered contact paper on the walls, and metal cabinets covered in contact paper(that my sis started peeling off and then quit doing).......It's a disaster, and I can't wait to have a nice normal kitchen! thumbup

Just remember, Laura. The end will justify the means.

Congratulations toward getting a new remodel! muggs

Laura, I'd love to see your pictures, but it says I need to log in to be able to see them?

Lynn, it's really easy to sign up.. free registration. They are quirky like that.. they want you to sign up, even to view other people's stuff.

Laura, OMG, what a mess! I can't wait to see your "new" room! The mess, it will be soooo worth it!! grinnnn

Lynne, I'm sorry it wouldn't let you in--I didn't realize you had to be a member to view the pictures.......

The bad thing is, with all the mess and the stuff all in the living room I've been spending most of my time upstairs out of the way......needless to say laying on the bed watching TV is enough to put me to sleep....lol zzzzz

I'll keep updating with new pics....and you know I really realize how lucky I am to be getting this done. My mom lived with an old(but decent) kitchen for years(not as bad as mine is), and just last year had it beautifully remodeled...The kitchen is such a gathering room though, that it was really important for me to get it done soon.

The room will look totally different so I'm soooo excited......and like you all said, the mess will be so worth it--especially when I have people over for dinner and at christmas!

I haven't told mark yet, but next year I have big plans for the bathroom!!!! laugh He'll just love that......he he he..... :p

You are so lucky to have a handy hubby! Mine can't nail 2 boards together! Luckily this house we moved to (2 yrs ago Thanksgiving) had been mostly renovated. There were 2 rooms that needed cracks and holes patched and I took the windows out and sanded and painted on them. I want to refinish the floor in our bedroom this summer. The previous owners just glued the carpet to the old wood floors. They are in great condition. I started on that bedroom last fall and thought I would never get it painted. I still lack the trim but it is such a nice room now! I will be looking forward to your finished photos! Connie

Yes...you will really enjoy the finished product! But...enjoy this kitchen work because when you get to the bathroom one...YUCK CITY! Even though bathrooms are smaller...it has been the most difficult room to re-do. We had to the tub, toilet, sink...the whole darn thing. It was also more expensive to re-do...and we just have a teeny tiny one!

Loz, you're so lucky to have your kitchen remodeled! Be sure to post those pics when it's done!
I have a handy hubby, but the challenge is getting him to do it! laugh We need to remodel our kitchen, too, although most of its "ugly" is the cabinets and floor. This place used to be an office, and someone just slapped a few cabinets and walls up, rented it for a while, then sold it...to us...
Anyhow, the makeover's looking good! thumbup

When I had the house in Port Orchard the cabinets were hand built into the walls. So there was no going to the store and getting new fronts. And the old fronts we found downstairs were mildewed with 7 layers of different colors of paints peeling off of them. Bleach and a scrapper and then a hand sander got off the accumulated gunk but it was to find that the doors were a heavy plywood rather than solid wood. Well I couldn't afford new wood so...we bought trim and a fancy wallpaper and went to work pasting and liquid nailing. And the results were custom made cabinets that helped increase the fair market value 25,000 in six months from the time we bought it. We got it for 49,000 and refinanced for 75,000.

I think most of the next phase of demolition will happen this weekend when Mark cons his younger brother into coming up to help him rip down the old walls and put up drywall...... wavey

Laura, when we were moving in I found a note written in the cubby hole upstairs (our house is close to 100 yrs too, no closet space) and the note said the house was wired for electric lights in 1916. We were told the house was around 50 yrs old. This started me on a search for information on my house. I found out it was built in 1907. It is a great old house, we are only the third family to live here. The second one only lived here maybe 5 or 6 years. I tell my hubby they will have to pry my cold stiff body out of this house!

Hope you get your drywall all put up this weekend! My hubby is starting on vacation and I have stuff for him to do and he has lots of yard work planned, veggie garden work and finishing compost bins. It will go by quickly!

Akkkkk, I have no clue what happened. The first post it went to the dreaded page not found and so I tried again. So sorry for all the posts! Connie

Hey Loz...how about making a little "time capsule" to seal up behind the drywall. You could put info on you and Mark, pics of ya'll and maybe one of the house and yard with the date on it,a newspaper,a grocery store flyer with todays prices on it,etc. I think it would be really cool to find something like that!

Connie, don't worry--that happens to me sometimes too, I went ahead and deleted your extra posts out..... wavey Old houses are usually built so solid, not like they are today. It's hard to believe though that this house was built around 1895(I believe).......You'd never know it by looking at it, because of course it has siding, and has been updated through the years...except for the kitchen!!! :p It's last update was obviously 1960 something....

Gmom, that's a fantastic idea thumbup .....I was telling mom that I might leave a note inside, but I like the idea of a little capsule better....with current prices of things and such.....someone, someday would probably find it.....even if it was a long, long time from now and they were tearing it down and they'll think--wow this was put in here SOOOOO long ago laugh .....I've really written a lot all over the wood frame.....lol One of the things I put was---Mark worked hard on this--2005. Which of course his manly self got a kick out of.
Posted By: Dixie Angel Re: Kitchen makeover--what a mess! - April 27th, 2005 at 05:38 PM
That is a neat idea, G-mom! Makes me feel like tearing my walls out so I can do that, too! NOT!!! laugh laugh laugh

Hope Mark is not a procrastinator or it might be a long time to see the finished project. grinnnn Have you told him a date he has to be finished by yet, Laura? wink

No, no date set.....he works so hard at his job roofing that I don't want to push him until his body is broken....So I'll just let him do his thing....Luckily once he gets started on a project he works on it until it's finished...it's just getting him started that is the hard part. Since everything is being done by him then I figure it will be at least a few months.....

And Dianna, you could make something like that and hide it in the attic, or bury it outside somewhere.....when we first moved from England to the US and bought the house my parents live in Dad found an old note in the ground that someone had buried in something.....and he found an old watch, and he uncovered an old horse trough(SP????? that just looks funny, guess I"m tired).....there were always rumors that the man that built the house was rich and hid his money somewhere in the house.....

You'll have to take a picture to show us everything you put into the capsule thumbup I know I'm dying to see!

Loz...I would have been on the backhoe immediately! laugh

Did you see on the news a few days ago where those guys found all that old money buried in the yard? The amount of money was unreal, but then the worth of the super-old money, which was in GOOD shape, was out of this world!

All I've ever found in my digging adventures was old bottles, which was such a thrill! And, an old grave (freaky!). And, of course, the tons of arrowheads that are around here.

Are they in BIG trouble or what!!!! <img border="0" alt="[tongue]" title="" src="graemlins/tongue.gif" /> Shouldn't do stuff like that then brag on NATIONAL news about it!!!

Gotta watch out for those men thumbup

Looks like a good job thumbup ......And I know what you mean, Mark makes likes to make everything too......We can't just go buy it because then the trim won't be routed the way he likes it.......so I just let him do his thing...

Bet it feels a lot more open now huh? What color do you think you'll paint it???? We are picking out colors now too, for the kitchen......I have about 15 of those paper color sample things laying on the couch.......

Well, Mark knocked out ALL of the walls in the dining room, so it is basically just a gutted room........pretty ugly really.....He went and got the drywall today because it's the first nice day we've had for a while without rain. I never knew how stinking heavy that stuff is.....I helped him put up the drywall on the ceiling and WOW was that a task.......it isn't sanded or anything yet.....just up. The walls still haven't been touched yet. It's coming along slowly but surely. I'll take some more pics to post tomorrow.
