I saw this beautiful Eastern Tiger Swallowtail in a neighbor's flower garden today and took 11 pictures of it. This is the best photo of the group.

The white berries at the bottom of the pic is Poke Salet, commonly called pokeberries. I don't know what the orange flowers are, that the butterflyis feeding on, but I see them in a lot of gardens in the area.

Thorny, that is just beautiful!! I love all the colors in it, and that butterfly just sets it off perfectly!

And, as an aside, you already answered what one of my mystery plants is.. pokeberries. I thought so.

Here is a picture I took of a new species of butterfly for me. It is 2 Pepper and Salt Skippers I took at the Stone's River Greenway in Nashville, Tennessee on 08/18/2005. I just started studying butterflies and insects about 2 or 3 months ago so I am very green at identification. Thank goodness for eNature.com's online field guides and my camera!

I thought I'd share another Painted Lady with you all. This one was taken today on a hill of clover and tall grass on my property. I knew there were a bunch there, but then a truck went by and at least a hundred more fluttered up into the air. It was pretty cool to watch!

Oh that is a very pretty one!

Thank you, Triss! smile I didn't know they had such furry little bodies until I saw the picture on my computer. I think they're all gearing up for the commute back to the US and this bunch is just in transit, along with the Geese and Hummers. Oh well, as long as you guys send them all back next year. lol

I have to get them all first!

I've seen more butterflies this year than ever.
Posted By: Thornius Re: Today's Butterfly - August 28th, 2005 at 12:37 PM
Me too! And I'm starting to notice them more. I am primarily a bird watcher, but when Summer heats up birds go extremely dormant (as do birdwatchers) but butterflies become more active the hotter it gets. As long as I can stand the heat I can get GOOD butterfly pictures.

Thornius, those are beautiful photos. I just love those butterflies.

SuzyQ, I have a Painted Lady in my backyard this week. The first time ever, they are so pretty. Your pic is beautiful.
