I found this idea in an old issue of Carolina Gardener magazine.
Use broken pot pieces for garden plant labels.
It didn't say what kind of pen to use, but I'm assuming a good permanent marker would work. I have a LOT of pieces of pots, so I know what I'm doing tomorrow!

I use plant markers from the paint dept at home depot ( you know the free paint sterers they have sitting in buckets on the paint counter) To justify taking a hand full go to the hardware section and buy a wood burning tool to burn the name of the plant onto the stick with. Then coat the stick with some urethane and they will hold up for a couple of seasons

That is pretty cool.
Also - either one could be painted with a pretty scene and then urethaned.
Lord...another excuse to not do housework!
