This is a good way to not only use all of that leftover yarn from projects, but also make a very thick and warm lap blanket. (I have also done this using two strands of colors to make an actual pattern.)

I started out with two strands of different colors from my yarn pile and chain stitched 200. Then it was back and forth with a double crochet until it was the size I wanted. Each time one color ran out, I'd grab another out of the box, not caring for color match or size of the ball. It was all very random but makes for a great pattern. This one is used by my 3 year old and it is the perfect size to cover his whole body and will be a great lap blanket once he gets older. It has also been washed at least a dozen times and holds together very well.

Triss ~ this is so handsome and useful! Worked with a double strand would make it so warm and durable, it is a great concept! Thanks so much for sharing it with us all.

Some questions:

Because you were working with two strands of yarn, what size aluminum hook did you use?

Have you ever purposefully bought yarn specifically for doing one of these? Perhaps a special color or style of yarn you wanted to include as a repeating theme?

And, would you mind doing a copy/paste of this into Crochet 101 so that it appears in both places?

You do such nice work, Triss, I always enjoy seeing the fruits of your labors.

Triss that is really pretty, it makes you want to just wrap up in it.

I just love it, Triss!

Are all the yarns the same content?
The orange/green section, though not the colors, reminds me of frost on the windows in winter - very interesting!

I like that you used double yarn - gives it a tweedy look.

Oh gosh, I did not even think about putting it in the crochet thread. Could we trouble a hostess to move all this to the end of that thread?

On your questions, I am pretty sure I used an H sized hook.

On yarn, most of my yarns were regular 4 ply as that is what I use for most of my other projects.

I did one of these for my niece and the color throughout was dark purple and I did large blocks of other colors to make a pattern. I want to do another one like that one of these days.

do you mean acrylic? I'm asking because I have been mosting knitting with wool for felting, before this afghan/

On the one for your niece... did the pattern just appear as you crocheted, or did you plan it?

Acrylic, yes Lynne.

As for her blanket, I made the pattern.
Oh I totally forgot, I made Lys one as well. Here is hers. More pinks than my nieces was but the same concept.
