Well... the one egg is on it's way to turning orange.
It really is much brighter than it looks here with my cheapo camera.
Wonder ( laugh ) why this egg is so much ahead of the game than all the others?
It was the first to grow, but not that much earlier than some of the others...

I was absolutely amazed it showed up finally.
Of course it's on the biggest one..
the littlest is still the littlest..

I know that winter is coming, and I do not
have much window space in the first place
and then to bring them in and keep them going.
I will be saying lot's of little prayers for
those poor plants...

You're looks absolutely gorgeous Lynne!!!

Lynne, how tall is your plant? It looks huge...

Dianna
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 2nd, 2005 at 05:11 AM
Dianna - the tallest parts of the plant are about 14 inches high (just went out and measured to be sure!). Interestingly, these are the 2 parts that I was able to overwinter last year by ignoring them pretty much. The newer seedlings from this year are mostly just putting out flowers now, like Weezie's. Not sure if they'll have time to make it to mature eggs this season, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This has been a very slow season for new wonder egg plants - another "wonder" why???
Posted By: weezie13 Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 2nd, 2005 at 06:17 AM
Lynne,
What did you do to the plant,
by "ignoring it"?

Place, temp, watering or none, light????

Inquiring minds want to know!!!!
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 2nd, 2005 at 08:17 AM
The pot was put in a little used room, along with some others that I continued to water, but unfortunately, this pot was in a place where I couldn't reach it, so it got little to no water all winter long. It was on the floor of a western facing room that had no window covers - it was about 4 feet from the window.

Like I said... pretty much neglected, which is why I was amazed that it survived. And I'm not advocating anyone to treat their plant like that - I really felt guilty about it when I kept seeing the few barely green leaves left on it. Was shocked when I moved it to a better spot and it actually started to grow again.

Well, I have 4 plants.....
I can experiment...
Posted By: MissJamie Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 4th, 2005 at 05:59 AM
YAY!! guess what guys?? I HAVE A SPROUT FROM 1 OF THE 3 SEEDS I PLANTED INSIDE!!! me soooo happy now!! now hopefully it'll survive lol. how do I keep it from getting leggy? it gets PLENTY of sun?
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 4th, 2005 at 07:46 AM
Miss Jamie - CONGRATULATIONS! flw

I would wait until the sprout has at least 2 sets of real leaves, and then if your weather is still warm enough you might want to put it outside in full sun til it gets cold there. Then I would bring it inside, and keep it in the sunniest window you have, and keep it moist - not too wet, not dried out of course.

Good luck and I hope the others sprout for you too!

thanks lynne! will do! can't wait lol!

well folks...my inside sprout is doing great and guess what?? I HAVE ANOTHER ONE!!! I'm sooooo happy lol (can ya tell??lol!)now if only the 3rd one will sprout I'll have 3 yay! and if these don't make it (knock on wood) I still have a few seeds left for spring :-)how is everyone's doing?
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - September 7th, 2005 at 01:16 AM
Congrats Jamie! It's so exciting, isn't it?

I noticed this morning, that the smaller white eggs are starting to turn yellow now. They really haven't reached maturity yet, but I guess that is the way the plant is telling me it's time to wind down. Days are getting much shorter, and the temps are cooling a bit too.

I also noticed that 2 fully opened purple flowers were somehow "cut" off the plants. It looks like a fresh cut - can't imagine what got to them, as nothing like that happened before. In the long run it doesn't matter since the plants are starting to shut down - but I'm curious to find out so it doesn't happen next time.

I'll try and take a pic of them later :-) sorry ladystressout I don't have any to spare. If I did though I'd be happy to share with you! I'm sure somebody has some they can share though :-)

Well, since I never got it into a bigger pot, it never got very big, and kept losing leaves & flowers here & there. I did get 2 whole eggs..lol.

Mine have a bunch of purple flowers
on them, but no eggs..
Wonderin' about over winterin' them..
*sigh* not much window space here..

Well, I've been so wrapped up in my own doings that I haven't been following this much - but I just scrolled down it again.

I think I will try this eventually - I showed it to Jeff (he does have a registration here, but you never see him, I know). He liked this egg thing - I think he'll get a kick out of it if I can start it up.

I've never seen any here in Toronto - but there's always a first time and it might as well be me.

I havent seen anything like that -- thats very interesting smile smile
Posted By: melcon6 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 2nd, 2005 at 07:11 PM
I don't think I've ever told you guys about my wonder egg experience, I planted like 7 or 8 seeds, whatever was in the pack from Wally world, and they all sprouted within a week. When it got time to pot them up , the directions said to snip off all but the healthiest one , I just couldn't do it eek , so I carefully separated them all and got seven seedlings all in their own pots. I gave four away and keep getting the exciting updates . Duh
I'm down at my sisters house right now and cannot believe how huge and lush hers is; we're going out to get pictures of it today.
Posted By: weezie13 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 2nd, 2005 at 08:14 PM
Wow, you've got lot's of eggs...

I'm still waiting...

Anyhow, question for you Mel.............
Did you see the grasshoppers on the plant?

Your leaves look somewhat similar to mine,
and mine got the Flea Beetle on them..
Ate tiny holes in them.. mad

So, didja get some pictures??? cool
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 7th, 2005 at 05:13 AM
Mel - I don't know how I missed your post - good going! Don't worry too much about the grasshoppers... in the end the only thing that really matters are the flowers and eggs - the leaves don't last all that long on my plants either.

I told Rita I would put some updated pictures on here. I had sent her some seeds. These were taken about an hour ago. I took 2 half pictures to try and get all the eggs in the shots.

I am still hoping they have enough time to ripen before it gets too cold outside. Can't believe there are 2 new flowers on them - no hope for them at this point...
Posted By: weezie13 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 7th, 2005 at 08:17 AM
I am going to have to pull my 4 plants in
for the winter, or I'll never get any eggs...
That is for sureeeeeeee!!!
Posted By: melcon6 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 18th, 2005 at 02:57 AM
Lynne, you have sssooooooo many eggs! I only have a few and they are all still white!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 18th, 2005 at 03:11 AM
i gotta try again next year...
Posted By: plants 'n pots Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 18th, 2005 at 03:38 AM
Mel - I think we learned from this, that we need to start them indoors even earlier than we have been doing. idea

Don't be jealous, by the way...
all the heavy rains we had for 8 days made my largest wonder egg swell up and crack, and get pretty disgusting looking. I don't know if the seeds we can see will be viable or not next year.
I know we needed rain badly, but not 4 months worth in 1 week!!! frown shk :p

This is how I just cut it from the plant - ewwwww!

I'd still try the seeds Lynne,
You just never know..

My tomatoes look like that when they
fall to the ground and those puppies
still sprout...

Give it a try!!!!

Oh yes, yes, Lynne! Those seeds look beautiful! I would get them out of the fruit and lay them out to dry, they may get moldy if you leave them in. I use an old cafeteria tray lined with paper towels to dry my seeds out on.

Mel,
Did she start those from seeds this year?
OR did she buy a plant already started??
Or was it one from last year still growing????
Posted By: melcon6 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 24th, 2005 at 09:12 AM
It's one that I started from seed up in Maine in June, and got seven plants started, I gave her that one and I kept mine in the pots and she thought it was to put in the ground. She lives in Mass and we exchange stuff all the time. I think next year I will start them indoors in April, then put right in the ground in June. Hers did so well and I think mine got too dry sometimes .
Posted By: weezie13 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 24th, 2005 at 09:24 AM
I was wondering that...

I kept repotting mine one size bigger pots...
and when I ran outta time to keep repotting,
they stopped getting bigger, but all the time
I was repotting, I wasn't getting any flowers..
So, I was thinking that because I kept repotting
it, it was so busy putting out roots and not
sending out flowers....so, I left it go...

I am hopin' to over winter mine, inside the house,
and get them going bigger next spring...

Does your sister still have it in the ground????
Posted By: melcon6 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 24th, 2005 at 04:04 PM
Yes, it's still in the ground.
Posted By: weezie13 Re: Wonder Egg IV - October 24th, 2005 at 06:34 PM
Is she going to bring it in?????
