I often say that the morning glories were my first plants, 'cause those are the first I remember planting when I was a little girl.

But I have to remember pansies - those little velvet flowers as I called them then. I used to swipe them from a neighbour's garden and take them to my mother.

I think I told that story before, so I'll spare you the details.

I almost never buy the things and plant them. This year though, it looks like pansies are walking into my life on their own. One of the tenants brought a couple of damaged plants somebody threw out. I put them in the same wee circle I was working on at the time and here's the first one.

Pip, pip! Here I am . . .

Now, here's something that inspires me - this little log arrangement is at the corner of a lot just around the corner from us. In my opinion, this is the belle of the neighbourhood . . .

I'm going to be trying this with a log I have.

Carly ~ mind if I inspire you some more?
(don't mean to hijack your post... shocked )

Just took these pics of my icicle pansies. I bought them 2 autumns ago, and they reseeded themselves beautifully. When they started popping up as seedlings this past fall, I moved them around to where I wanted them this spring and they have gloriously rewarded me. I highly recommend the icile pansy type. I've never had such success with pansies as these.

Pansys are one of my very favorite flowers. I know I've posted here before that I can't grown them in the ground at this house. Don't know why, they just keep on dying no matter how many times I plant them so, I plant them in pots. We've had such cool weather this spring and summer that mine are still going strong!

Carly, is that a real log? How did you clean it out?
Posted By: Carly Re: I've come round to Pansies again . . . - June 4th, 2005 at 07:26 AM
It isn't my log - the one in the log is on another street, just around the corner.

I don't know how they did it.

I'm going to experiment with it though. Jeff just soaked a couple of our old logs I saved when I cleaned out the fence areas last year. I had him soak them in detergent and water in one of the garden waste buckets. That should get rid of any bugs that are living in them and I'll bet there's a few homeless now.

They're sitting out there now waiting for me to do 'something'.

I'm just going to wing it - the pansies I've got so far have come free or from the 2 fer a buck table.

I'm going to put some soil in a hole in the log and poke in one of the small seedlings. That's how I figure it was done. If it doesn't work, well I guess I'll be back at the 2 fer table.

And yes - you can hijack my posts anytime with wonderful pictures like that.

You know, I was just going to read,
and do some posting tonight,
but I just can't help myself sometimes...

I love all of everyone's pansy's..
They are in my top 100 flowers...
*I never could have a top 10* :p

Any how, those of you wanting to make those
hollow logs, take a section that's pretty..
And flat on the bottom, if not a chain saw will
work, if you have one and can operate it..haha wink
or dig a wee~bit of a hole in the ground as the
bottom is croaked, and it'll flatten the top out.

But if you take a drill with the drill bit that
drills out DOOR HANDLES ON WOODEN DOORS...
You'll have the same ball~park idea for the log..

Just drill it once for that size, or drill it one time in the middle and then if you want a larger hole, each time you take that drill bit, 1/2 off the side of the hole until you get the size you want..

I'd give anything for pencil and paper right now.
