If there is always a problem, then maybe you're a pessimist--life doesn't always give you lemons, there are also times of pure joy no matter how fleeting that moment is.

My personal answer to "If There Is a Rowboat On The Ocean..." was "Then I want to steer it as gamely as I can, up one swell and down the next, until I reach safe harbor for Maxi and I."

What I so enjoy about these questions/answers is that we all visualize the question differently. Some of us put ourselves in the boat. Others saw it from a distance. Some saw opportunity, others saw danger-to-be-avoided. FASCINATING!

That's Maxi...confident and serene. His motto ought to be:

Our UPS guy NEVER knocks. He just pitches our packages in the bushes by our front door. When we first moved here, my husband was expecting a package, waiting and waiting, so one day he tracks the package. He comes home and says, "Do you know Freddy's last name?" (Our next door neighbor.)
I say "No, but I think it's something Hispanic, thay're Filipino. Why?"
He says, "It said the package was delivered today. It was signed for by F. Rontdoor."
So, he's totally confused. I think about it for a second, then start to laugh, and go look under the bush next to the front door. Sure enough!

F. Rontdoor! laugh STILL makes me laugh. laugh

Here she is, does she look mean? only 115 pounds of dog. Her name is Molly.

A hook and line--without question......at least I'd be able to eat something(hopefully).....I love fishing! My theory is this.....a candle and the matches will eventually be all used up.....and a big knife won't help too much really--maybe to cut fruit off of trees and stuff, but I could pull that off with my hands......so the hook and line are the best best.....but one thing you didn't mention is if there is a lake or river nearby.... laugh If there isn't I'd pick the knife I guess.

laugh laugh laugh
Posted By: Merme Re: If There Is.... - December 4th, 2004 at 05:54 AM
For myself, I would choose the candle and matches. Why? Because I could use a match to light the candle, which I could then use a part of to start a larger fire...benefiting from the flame and the melting wax. Extinguishing the candle, I could reserve it and the remaining matches for later use.

A fire would not only light the darkness, but would give me a way to cook food, keep me warm, offer some protection from wild animals who are afraid of flames, and could possibly serve as a signal to anyone searching for me.

To my way of thinking, a hook and a line wouldn't be as useful because I'm not really willing to eat raw catch. There is the possibility of catching something with perhaps a sharpened stick or a net ripped from my shirt, or rigging some sort of trap. Which then of course could be cooked and eaten.

To me, the knife seems the most useless of all and I'm terribly interested in the fact that one of you chose it and another considered it as a viable option. That wouldn't occur to me.

Cool, huh?

New question coming right up, so stayed tuned!

... and they call that "reality TV" ROFL!!!!
I didn't mean to infer that I would EVER use the knife against anyone. A knife is only a tool.
I can make a fishing pole and line and hook (and many other tools and things) with one. (Boy Scouts 101)
Use the knife to cut a vine, weave the vines fiber strands into a line. Carve a pole, carve a hook. Go fishing!

Me, Tarzan! I'll survive... can you?

Hi "Tarzan" ~ wavey

Although I'm aware a knife could possibly be used as Bill suggested to start a fire, the reason I decided not to choose it is because I know I could not use it that way.

Years ago, I bought one of those fire starter kits with a flint and steel rod, etc because I spent much time backpacking/camping and I thought it would be handy. It wasn't. I could never make a fire with the thing. So....I bought boxes and boxes of kitchen matches, the wooden kind, and dipped them into melted parafin to coat the tops with a protective layer of wax. That's what I took along on my journeys.

What is so fascinating to me about these questions is our assorted perceptions of the elements and how we individually visualize ourselves interacting with them.

This question was particularly interesting because of the underlying assumption everyone made that the items represented a need we might have to meet. But consider: the unmet need was not explicitly stated in the question....we could have encountered those items on our kitchen table one lazy summer day.

Everlastingly kewl, huh?

Oh, all you guys are too funny! I really enjoyed your answers on this one.

If such a mirror existed, I'd stand in the broad sunbeam of that thing, my face straight into the fresh wind, exulting in whatever truth came flying at me.

New question soon, same Bat Time, same Bat Station! laugh laugh
