My husband came up with this idea and I really love it and want to share it. We burn wood for heat and so while cutting wood he took a couple 8 to 14 inch thick logs and cut them in lengths of about 12 inches and up. Then he hollowed them out and put a fine wire mesh over the bottom end and I'm going to use them in my water pond garden area. I like things to look natural and will give me different planting heights without looking so planned or artificial.

I love that idea....I have been doing something like that with those tangle root ends that I dig up and planting cactus in them! But the problem is it takes forever to dig out the inside with my drill....what did your hubby use to remove the insides???? wavey

Yeah, I would love to know, too. This sounds like a great idea!

Well I finally got to asking him and he said they are dead logs and easy to hollow out. Just used rebar to chistle thru it. I know they wont last years and years, but with so little invested, we'll just replace them as needed. I also like how he has the heavy mesh at the bottom extend about 5 inches out farther the the trunk so I buryed it under the ground a bit for stability.

ive been useing old dead hollow trees in my garden for years! i love the look of em. mine were already hollow when i found em in the woods.i also use old dead tree branches,& logs to make flower beds. it adds i nice touch to the hollow trees.just keep an eye out for mice! i found out the hard way they like em too. years ago i put some in for my mom, then when she moved she wanted em moved to her new home. so when i was cleaning em out,i felt somthing in the back of my shirt.i FROZE! it moved again, i slowly got up & began walking to the house, it moved again,& i ran like hell!! stright for the bathroom, riped my shirt off & throu it in the tub.and there it was..a little brown mouse with big black eyes!
