ANYBODY DO ANY ROCK COLLECTING????????
Posted By: weezie13 Re: ROCK COLLECTING???????? - December 7th, 2003 at 07:48 PM
My father did alot of that,
the fossils and such......
I absolutely can not go by a rock
that's pretty and moveable!

He could build a stone wall
like you wouldn't believe,
I how ever never aquired such a trait.

But he loved the different rocks and
things inside and different type of rock
inside rocks and he could look at it and
tell you about it,

And he would look at them and see different
things at the shape of them, and tell you it
and you'd look and by golly you'd see it.
*kinda like seeing shapes in the clouds*

My husband is a geologist, so YES!!! we have lots of rocks around! When we were first married, his job was to look for industrial gold for a small oil company. They were bought out by Mobil Oil and the company he had worked for was closed.

He has some really pretty agates, amethysts, geodes, large quartz crystals, fossils, etc. He even missed our son's first birthday when he went on a work trip to Austrailia. :p

What always amazed me, was that he could not identify any gemstones that I might ask him about - said that wasn't his field. I thought, a rock is a rock is a rock... no? Duh Guess not...

I have them but darned if I know what they are now and what to do with them.
My father worked for Chevron and was a research chemist.....so I have many different kinds of rocks with oil in them. His job was to find the fastest most economical, less damaging way to remove oil from the rock. Have some fossils as well and some geodes(sp). We have a mineral and gem place right here in Fallbrook that is amazing!

I thought is was soo strange looking I have had that since a teenager and just can't seem to depart with it. Don't you just love my knowledge of rocks! laugh

That's like what my dad's collection is like..
He would see things in them..
(and there's an older gentlmen that has the same thing, and it was so funny when I first met him,
because he said he's never had anyone guess so
many of his rocks, and I told him that it was easy
to guess because my father had alot of them too..)

It's so much fun..
The colors, the veins of what ever they call it...

Hi Weezie,

When I first posted it I couldn't see it either. Right click your mouse on the picture, a list should come up, click on Show Picture and it should suddenly appear. Let me know if that works.

I collect rocks but a different kind.

Meteorites.

I buy them though, don't have time to search for them on my own. I own a small piece of the moon and Mars. Most are asteroidal material. Neat hobby, true extraterrestrials! I have photos of some of my collection on my web site, look at my profile for the link.

They are found almost anywhere although you have to know what you're looking for. There are people who go hunting for them, especially in places where bright meteors are seen to fall. Right now the Sahara desert is a hotspot. It's easier to find them there because the sand is light colored nad the meteortites are dark colored so they stand out, like in Antarctica.

There are a number of legitimate meteorite dealers on the net. Meteorites are sold by grma weight. Their prices depend on a number of things like rarity, place of origin (I.E. an asteroid,Mars or the moon), condition (how weathered the piece is),
type (Iron, stone or stoney iron), etc.

The following link has links to dealers, education resources, etc.to learn more for those that are interested.

They can cost anywhere from 40-50 cents a gram to HOLY MOSES I'LL NEVER HAVE ONE OF THOSE!

Neat hobby that is truely facinating.

Tom,
My son is into rocks, he loves bringing home
books from the library on all different sorts..
He loves the colors and all the info on them.

Him and his grampa used to go take walks in the
woods and grampa loved rocks too and would tell
different stories about them, he misses that.

We got to the creeks here and look at them in
the summer time... we collect all different ones, shiney and all black or ones with veins through them, I dont' know enough to tell him, but I'm sure it's enough to keep him interested in them.

Thanks for all your info>

Shhhhhhh! It's been WARM here! Low to mid 50's! The trend is supposed to continue they say. Maybe rain next week. We've had about 22 inches of snow total so far.I've seen enough of the white stuff to last me the rest of the year.

Tom,
It's supposed to get warm here this weekend too.
Thought about not shoveling and just let it melt.
But with our luck we would have jinxed it and made it snow more.
I'm glad to hear you've had nice weather........
You got alot that way last year I thought!!!

I collected rocks when I was younger. The rocks moved with me form new house to new house. Dad was always trying to talk me out of moving my dear rocks with me.

After I was married my parents were moving again. Dad said no way am I moving those rocks again.

When he wasn`t looking I put them in his briefcase. He kept commenting on how heavy his case was, but he never looked inside to see what was in there until they got to the new place.

Mom said the expression on his face was priceless. Well I have the rocks now and have passed them on to my boys.

I used to keep mine in a fishing tackle box
and I would sort by colors... mostly whites,
and blacks and then browns.. stuff with shiney things in it and then the ones with stripes.....
I had so much fun, and you know Santa was supposed to bring one for my son this year, and he forgot, Hmmmmmff!!! I'll see if he'll drop one off for his birthday!! laugh
