Yes, this is an outdoor fern.

I think it could be some sort of athyrium.

(Athyrium , from the Greek, a, "without", qureos (thureos), "shield").

There are loads of them. Can you get a picture of both sides of an individual 'leaf'?

I may be fairly new to gardening but I've read a book. (A full library of them - and I love ferns).

This is a fern that someone is going to send to me. She sent this pic to show me what it looks like hoping I could identify it. I know it's an outdoor fern but she lives in Malaysia. I'm concerned that the ferns that may grow well for her climate may not grow so well for my climate. Any comments/suggestions? I will try to get her to take a pic of both sides of the leaf.

Mocha,

There are about 12,000 species of fern, and, by and large, they are notoriously difficult to identify by photo, though it is possible in some cases. Looks like a N. Exaltata 'Whitmanii,' but there are literally dozens of possibilities, and N.E. Whit. really isn't even one of them... Will see what I can turn up on it, as it's a beautiful piece.

***Wouldn't bet on being able to grow this outside in Indiana... At least, not for more than a few months.
