Sibyl,
I can't tell whose cute butt that is - but, it is the butt of very cool backyard bird. It could be puffy tufted titmouse... they are such great fun!

I bet you have chickadees. too...

If you feed them -- they will come.

Looks like a Titmouse to me, too. Second guess would be a poorly lit female Cardinal. I just finished filling my tube and platform feeders with a new kind of feed to test out. I also put out a FRESH cake of suet.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: bird pic - January 22nd, 2007 at 04:56 PM
I don't think it's a cardinal's hiney - that's a titmouse. I could probably find a hiney shot to compare!!
thorny, Did you know that juncos love thistle and finch food?

Fresh cake of suet! I go through 2 a week where the squirrels can't get too and every other day another if I fill the creeper's siet cage (squirrel city). I am always looking for sales on suet.

Snow turns birds into greedy little pigs!

Now -
That there's a doll of a tufted titmouse. Some days he is my favorite backyard visitor. He grabs a seed and props it between his feet and bangs away at it. Titmice love whole peanuts but are happy to eat good old sunflower seeds. If you have titmice around than chickadees are not far away!!!

Sibyl - I purchased a Sony Cybershot and telelens - the set up was $500 - then I bought a cheap tripod. Those costs don't compare to the SLR digitals that the pros use. So, be happy with your pictures. I probably should not have spent the money

Chickadees do that same Woodpecker pounding on seeds they hold against a branch with their foot. I watched a Titmouse AND a Chickadee hammering away until the Kinglet showed up and stole all my attention.

Sibyl, I used Photoshop Elements 5.0 with an added Noise Ninja plug-in to lighten, sharpen, resize, intensify colors, and despeckle (remove fuzziness). These two programs will run you $200.00 to $500.00 retail......OR you can get them for FREE (and legally right now)off of a bittorrent site like TorrentSpy if you have DSL or Cable.

The best seed to use in any and ALL of your bird feeders is Black-Oil Sunflower Seeds (called BOSS, for short by birders). The best place I've found to buy it is Tractor Supply Company (TSC), a farm and garden supply store. You can get a 50 pound bag of BOSS there for a little less than $15.00 (including tax). a bag that size lasts 1-2 months once you get a large population of birds feeding daily in your yard. I also buy my rabbit food there. a 20 pound bag of rabbit food cost $10.00 there and one bag that size feeds my one rabbit ALL he can eat for six months!!! And I get the richest manure in the world to compost! laugh

wow! i buy a 10 pound bag for about 5-6 bucks! its a wild mix, i have noticed they like the sunflowers best, those are always the first seeds to go,
i do have a bird area out back, cant get to it cause my husband dumped the pool there :p so ive been puttin seeds in the front yard, i think there starting to relize were the foods been moved grinnnn

Sibyl! That second photo looks like a White-Breasted Nuthatch! NICE BIRD!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: bird pic - January 26th, 2007 at 02:18 PM
sibyl,
Why does the pool affect feeding birds?
You have hungry winter birds... Year round friends. You have backyard gems - wait til you see the chickadee!

I betcha that basket hanging there is going to get you other critters, besides the feathered ones, right quick!

I think last posted last night... I bet that basket is empty and 1/2 chance it's gone as I type!

yep jane it was about empty! the pool is 30x30 round and still in pices all over my bird area, i cant reach or get to the bird feeders, so i got a couple baskets to feed em in the front yard for now, im already gettind bird dropings all over my bench but o-well. i can wash it off in spring, wink [Linked Image] [IMG]

Sibyl,
I lvoe your baskets. I can't imagine my red belly boy coming to a basket! How cool it that?

Hey, where are your squirrels... they'd have my basket in a hot minute!
Posted By: Thornius Re: bird pic - January 26th, 2007 at 11:11 PM
Wow a Male Red-Bellied Woodpecker! I have had exactly ONE Red-Bellied in the five years I have owned my house and that was three years ago. They are all over the yards just 100 feet away across the highway but rarely come to mine.
Posted By: sibyl Re: bird pic - January 28th, 2007 at 01:14 AM

I like the top picture of the male White-Breasted Nuthatch. They are one of the sweetest birds and can sometimes be enticed to eat from your hand.
