That's a Johnny~Jump~Up!!!
It will reseed prolifically if left outside..
& loves cooooooooool weather....

I love it and have no clue where it came from! but i'm leaving it to go to seed! thank you weezie!!

there are different colors?

Not really.....
Different sequence of color combo's..
but just slight..
Everyone is Purple, White, Yellow..
Some just have more purple or more white,
or a pale yellow like...

And the first one's out, are more dark..
and as the plant fills out, grows bigger
*and maybe even more heat as the summer progress's*
that's when the paler colors come out...

We had those in front of the apartment building!!I thought they were miniature pansies or violas!!Glad to now have a name to give them. I love them; they are so tiny and cute!

Is yours tiny jiffy? There are full sized viola/pansys that also come in those color combos. I love the johnnys too!

mine are about as big as a large man's thumbprint would be.

My johnnys you could fit a bloom on a dime.

Wrennie, mine are definately J~J~U's...
And I can fit at least a quarter on some of
the first blooms of the season..
but I have a ton of compost, epsom salts, manure and fish emulsion on mine and the blooms are big.
(the first blooms of the season are always the biggest, when it's coolest.. as the summer wanes on and the temps get hotter then the next session of flowers are smaller)

But they are definately Johnny's...

A gardening friend of mine has these and they are all over between her iris' and soooo pretty! She picks them out because they aren't 'suppose to' be there, but I told her they were pretty and filled in the space - so I think she is now letting it be and it's so pretty!

Johnny~Jump~Up's would be great between taller type spring bulbs too...

Because they both come up early in the spring,
the j~j~u block the bare soil and don't let much come up..*eventually* and, once they're "spent"
*too tall and gangley come the hot summer days,
they're relatively easy to pull out, *not much of a root system* but they do reseed prolifically.. (which can be a good thing)
Then, once you pull them out, and the bulbs maybe dying out, you can always just plant an annual where they all were, and those won't or shouldn't distrub the dirt too much where the j~j~u seeds are or the bulbs underneath..

(I do the same with forget~me~nots' up here too)

weezie? how large are the jju seeds? i'm thinking i'd like to collect some if it isn't too late.

Very tiny..
In each pod, I'd say the'res got to be 50/70 seeds, ball park..

And if you watch the seed pod,
it will go brown, and then open up..
Most of the time you can still get them
when they've opened..
Cause there will be some all along the outter
part of the seed walls when it opens up...

ok, i'll have to check to see if there are any left. i only have one flower left, nearly spent.

If you keep clipping the flowers and keeping it cool, *shade maybe* it will keep producing flowers..
Should anyways...

do they do better in the shade? 'cause if they do, i'm going to spread some of the seeds in the ash near the trees

They are a sun plant up here..
IN THE SPRING and EARLY SUMMER..
When it starts to get toooo hot,
they start to get too tall, lanky and
spindly and I pull them out..

I am not 100% sure about total shade for you..

I have read that sometimes if things that grow up here, and someone wants to grow down south,
they should put in some shade, cause that will keep it cooler...

Sooooooooooooooo, not 100% sure on this..

But you know my ole sayin', try it and experiment..
If you can, put some in different spots..
and see which one does better..

And they do really good, when they don't compete
with any other weed.. like on bare soil...

Holy cow Weezie.....are those ever pretty!!!!

That is half the reason why I am always so far behind in getting my garden in..
I just can't pull those beautiful plants..
