I inherited this plant from my mother, who thought she killed it in her office and didn't want it anymore. it's grown a lot of new leaves, and lost a lot of old ones. does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be? the leaves turn quite crispy and dry at the ends, so i'm trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong. overwatering? here are a few pictures

oops! I thought I checked after I posted and it worked. very wrong.

Here is a new try, but let me describe the plant too. The leaves are a medium purple colour, about 10cm long at their max, and the veins are a dark green. The leaves grow symmetrically (not alternating) and fairly close together. The plant has gotten very long and spindly, and it can't support itself upright. As the leaves get older, they get very dry and grey at the ends and along the edges.

Your plant is Strobilanthes dyerianus ("Persian shield")
There is some great info at this site , including the following; There are several things that might cause the crispy leaf edges and ends,
my guess would be low humidity levels.

well, i gave up on my google skills too soon. my friend found it. it's persian shield, strobilanthes dyerianus. it sounds like it needs more water, not less. i also need to prune it, but i'm not sure how. when i'm supposed to cut it back, does this mean from the tips? where there's new growth? i guess i'll post in a different area now, but i thought i'd solve my own mystery here.
