My seedlings - when do I fertilize and with what/how?

I have been putting them in bigger pots/cups with pot mix - the other day my husband picked me up some more, but he bought a different kind and it had fertilizer in that one.

I fertilized mine with a very diluted miracle-grow solution the other day.. it actually seemed to do worse for the plants, then better.. Duh [ there's a topic in this forum about my damping off of my sprouts.. it's mentioned there]
Good luck, though thumbup

I have never like fert. potting soil because I prefer to control the ferts myself. My friend uses the Miracle Grow potting soil and is please with it but he doesn't have time to fert.

Actually, I'm really not a seed person, but I really like using the Pro-Mix for whatever seeds I do try to plant  and they have done very well. thumbup I used Pro-Mix when I did my Blue River II Hibiscus seeds and the success rate was wonderful!!! clp

To fertilise seedlings, use worm juice, or a liquid fert at a maximum of half the recommended strength. Less strength more often is the go. Like 1/4 strength weekly.

And FISH EMULSION is a great organic fertilizer... thumbup )

For me, and my own fertilizering, is almost nothing with the liquid... other than transplanting time *to reduce transplant shock*
and once or twice after that for the plant to feed it's self while the roots are re~rooting..
so it can feed still until established..
(and I do a foliar feed of the leaves)

Weezie, I do use Miracle Gro "Quick Start" wink whenever I'm planting new bushes, shrubs, or even some perennials, wink but I just wet the soil in the planting hole and never put it on the plant itself. frown

It is ok to do the leaves,
it's called a foliar feed..
The plant will take up nutrition thru it's leaves,
especially when it's roots are disturbed..
*the poor guy/girl has to feed it's self somehow*

But never do a foliar feed in the hot sun..
It should only be done in the early morning hours,
or evening time *say around dinner, you don't want the plant to
go to bed with wet feet/leaves really either*

But doing it in the hole is good too,
then where ever the roots are, they might be
able to grab some right at the time of planting..

Weezie, a friend had picked up this bottle of Miracle Gro "Quick Start" for me because she knew I needed some. Actually, I had always used Ferti-lome Root Stimulator because it was recommended many years ago by the man at the nursery where I bought all my trees, shrubs and bushes. Duh but I remember he told me to water the dirt in the hole with it so the roots would grow out to get at the stuff. Well, it made sense to me, wink and I guess I've always done it that way because everything I planted lived and thrived. smile I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it! frown
