What are your thoughts on 4 on 1 apple trees?

I am looking to buy 1, where is a good place to buy one?

So far just Henry Fields and Gurneys have them listed.

Four in one apple trees are awesome, we bought one about 4 years ago and it's doing well it has macintosh, gala, red delicious and granny smith....I actually think we bought at Lowes. We are beginning to get apples on it....We made it an addition to our macintosh apple tree......this helped that tree produce apples....I think it was lacking a pollination partner, when we got the second apple tree our first apple tree started producing apples better.

I would definately buy another four in one if I only had a bigger lawn to put it in.....hubby keeps threatening to buy me a push mower if I add any more flowerbeds to the lawn, so I have to be very careful......I like using the riding mower.........lol

The only one thing that might be bad that I heard, that sometimes there's a dominate apple,
eventually takes over after a few years...

I am not sure of what cause's it, or how to stop it, but still, any home grown apple is better than store or none at all...

Well I got it planted tonight.
Here is what they say about it:

Each tree bears four different apple varieties which may be Rome, Red and Yellow Delicious, McIntosh Red, or Granny Smith, so you can enjoy many flavors and uses from a relatively small space. Produces fruit over a much longer period than you could expect from a single tree. Self-pollinating - the different varieties pollinate each other for optimum yields.

But they did say which of the 4 it has.

How many years before you get fruit from it???

I would think 3 or 4.

Another advantage of 4 in 1 apple tree is that you will have apples ripening at different times.

Many fruit trees are sold when they are 1 to 3 years old. So, technically some grafted fruit trees like yours may bear in about 2 years after planting.

That has got to be alot of fun to

Weezie is right about one type taking over the rest. I have two of the stone-fruit cocktail trees, the apricot grafts failed on both & the nectarine branches aren't looking too good. :p Looks like I may end up with just peaches and plums...but hey, couldn't beat the 2-for-1 price!

Depending on how these trees do, I'm considering getting the apple one as well...if DH lets me add another tree! (I had him cut down 2 last year)

One type should pollinate one of the others. It least that would make the most sense.

I got mine at a local nursery. I've never seen them at the big-box stores. You can also order them online, but I'm always leery of big plant purchases online. I would start with your small nurseries that carry trees, ask if they will be carrying or can order.

My understanding is that the stone fruit trees are all self-pollinating varieties...I would think they would have to be, since they are different types of fruit. Not such an issue with apples, which can pollinate each other!

Hoping for fruit this year - the nursery guy said they fruited last year, but I got them at the end of the season.

I have a 5 in 1 apple tree. it has MacIntosh, Cortland, Melrose, Gravenstein, and Yellow delicious. Last year was it's third year and I had three apples on it.

A moose found it's way in my yard and did alot of damage to the Cortland branch but i cut it back to an upward small branch and will hope for the best.

Just wondering how tall the tress gets, and do you harvest lots of apples off it?

Were going shoppin at Mussers Nursery here in Penna......i hope to get one.
