This bulb was planted by my grand-kids on Christmas day 2006. The small bulb in the first picture is a tulip bulb for comparison. The eremurus 'spider' is over 12" across.

This is what I spotted and photographed yesterday (looks like a small globe artichoke coming straight from the soil). clp

And this is what my nursery lady says it will look like in summer 2008. It will be about 10' tall with pink spiky inflorescences. It should get to 6' plus in summer 2007 but probably won't flower.

Yes Weezie, their common name is the foxtail lily, and it is the first new plant to show in my new garden, which is why I am so thrilled. I've got a few things coming through that were here when we moved but this is the first one that I wanted, and deliberately planted myself (courtesy of the grand-kids).

You say you haven't got room for one. When I was researching plants to put in my garden, I obviously checked the Royal Horticultural Society's site. Apparently they have 500 of the robustus variety (the largest) on display. Their grounds must be nearly as large as mine. lala wink

Mine's that size too, but it's filled up right now...

I planted a foxtail lily 5 years ago, the first 2 years it did well, bloomed the second with one bloom...then the third year only foliage and I haven't seen it since. ters I hope you have better luck!

Thanks Alan, you're just trying to cheer me up aren't you?

I'm just hoping that our winters, which are milder than yours, will be kinder to the new foxtail. After all, if the RHS can manage 500 of them then surely I can manage 1, even if I have to sit up all night with it and feed it beef tea. muggs

I'll let you know summer 2009. smile

Those are neat Webwise. Too bad I don't have anyplace for anything that tall. It would have to go out in my yard somewhere (not right up next to the house) and the deer would probably eat it laugh Post pictures of it when it gets going good in your garden (bet your flower gardens are gonna be beautiful!)
