A few weeks ago I could have sworn I saw an oriole our of the corner of my eye at me feeders. Well, yesterday Marton saw him!I showed him some ID pics so we can be sure of what kind it is, in case he sees it again.

Orioles are so pretty! smile I've never seen an Oriole around here, but I've been told we have them, so maybe I should get one of those Oriole feeders. Duh I have put fresh orange wedges out before but that didn't do anything. frown

Patti you should have the orchard and baltimore oriles like I do. i had a flowering quince that they loved to eat from. You will probably hear them before you see them. Look high up in trees. they like open woods, or the edge of woods, riverside groves, orchards & shade trees.
When I clean up my veggie garden in the spring they always come down and pick around in the loose soil for bugs {yay}

Wrennie, I checked Nature Hills nursery and they have the Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince. It's beautiful and hardy for my area, wink but I really don't have any more room for a bush 3'-4' that needs full to partial sun. frown Do you know of any flowers that they like? Duh

That is so awesome that you have an oriole right now Wrennie! I love it when they come! I put out an oriole feeder for them at my house but they won't be here for a while yet! They will also come eat from the hummingbird feeders! thumbup If you have any extra oranges that won't get eaten they love those!

Patti
Orioles eat primarily bugs and nectar. They are attracted to the nectar of the quince bush. I would think any flower that would attract a hummingbird with a relatively large flower and a strong enough stem or rim of a pot for them to perch on, may bring them in.

Wrennie, do you think one of those Oriole Feeders would help. Duh I would think some of my lilies would have stems strong enough to support them. :rolleyes: I've hung orange slices from the tree, but perhaps it would be better to put them on a platform feeder. idea

All I get on orange slices are ants when I hang them in a tree. And flickers, they love ants.
An oriole feeder just might do the trick! I even sell one that has spots to put orange wedges and grape jelly{they love that too} Maybe on a shepherds hook or pole out where they'll see it easily. thumbup

Wrennie, I never noticed any ants when I hung the orange slices from my tree, but maybe some of my birds were eating them. Duh Of course, I guess that would be a good thing if it meant I was feeding other birds that liked ants. wink Actually, I used to get flickers at my other house but haven't seen any since I've lived here. frown Geesh, I didn't know Orioles liked grape jelly, but I don't know how I would offer it to them. Duh

Ya put the grape jelly in a bowl, Silly......OR you could spread it on a crumpet with some butter and offer it to them with a cup of Earl Grey Tea in your FINEST China!

Oh, Thorny, that's such wonderful idea! Duh I really like that a lot better than just using a plain old bowl. smile laugh Nothing but the best for my birdies! wink laugh

Erm, sorry. I'm a bit o' an Anglophile.

The oriole feeder I have has little indentations on top for the jelly. Any bowl that wont flip over when they land on it. Or yup a saucer will work too. Just watch when it rains.Youll want to dump the water or change it all together.

Now I want crumpets! laugh
