whats the diffrence between devils ivy and philodendruns???????or are they the same plant?

i have one and it looks like devils ivy, but it also looks like a philodendrun,
so now im confused,

dose anyone know the diffrence?

thanks the ones in water have roots galor, it needs potted, i have other cuttings that need to be put in water, im gonna try to stop cutting it so it will grow long,

Ok I have a question, when you cut the ends off, how does the area you cut from grow? Does it just grow another long line of stems and leaves or two? Or does it not grow from the cut? Does that make sense?

roots grow from the nods in water and new shoots grow from the nods out of water, ill see if i can get an up close pic for ya

Not the rooting parts, but the part you leave on the main plant. I have never cut mine cuz I dunno what they will do if I do cut them.

if you cut it, it will just grow another stem and leaves from a nod close to were you cut.

So just one stem then rather than two?

triss, i've had them grow one and i've had them branch. just depends on how/where you cut it and it's mood!

Well I guess I will try a stem and see what happens. Keep track of what I do cuz I really want them to branch out a bit and get fuller. Any tips on achieving that?

i dont know how to cut them to make em branch out, like jiffy said sometimes they do and sometimes they dont

i took this cutting out of water its small but you can see its branching out, maybe the trick is to cut it were it has more than one nod there?

That makes a lot of sense. I will look at my plants tomorrow and see what I can find. I will post pics of what I cut.

Your plants definately look like pothos to me. I usually detect the difference b/t pothos and philodendrons as the phil. having what appears to be "sharper" edges..more, um, angular. If you can see on your pothos, the edges are bit softer and more curvier.

Good luck on whoever is rooting their plant! I am trying to root a cutting from a marble pothos and it seems to be taking forever! I have to check now and make sure I have the nodes submerged in water!

the starters in my pic have been in the water for a few months, they do take awile to get started.

Do they root faster if you just tuck a node under the soil with the momma plant and if so once it is rooted that way would you just snip the stem once the tucked in shoot starts to grow?

Triss - I've had a pothos now since I lived in Alaska - 30 years now!

Usually each year around this time, it loses a bunch of leaves - I don't think it likes the dryness with the heater on. The stems get leggy, so I cut off the healthy tips and make sure to put at least one good node in the water. You can also put it in a pot, making sure it does not dry out. It doesn't have to go in with the mother plant, but can if you'd like to make it fuller. Mine have only put out a single new stem from where the ends were cut.

sibyl - I agree that your plant is a pothos.

Here are some cuttings that have been growing in a betta fish vase for about 1 1/2 years. The fish died last spring, but the cuttings are doing very well.

Great plant. My mom had things growing in water like crazy... She never missed with the though

Mom used soil in the house only when necessary! She had all various potho. ivy, philodendrom (whichever) growing lots of places - over things and around things... and generally it led back to a pot of rooty water.

Thus my violet leaves for which I still have no solution.
