What you have is a large Moth, I'm not sure what kind but I'll see what I can find out about it on Google Image Search.

It looks like a Polyphemus moth,the most common of the silk moths. Named for the one-eyed giant in Greek mythology.

We birders switch over to Butterflies, Moths, Insects, and other critters when the bird activity is slow. Even when Bird activity is high we have a major interest in butterflies, too.
I took about 200 pictures.
