I didn't either. I had no idea what to do with them, and no time to figure it out, because I got them right around Christmas.

Now that I know what they are and haevread up on them, I'm sure glad they didn't die!

Sarah you do have a crown of thorns. Cinta says you can start them in water. If I ever get one big enough or that has a branch I will try it.

no, you are a barberry

I finally saw the lady who gave them to me in ths store. They are crown-of-thorns, but she has several colors, and is not sure which I ended up with. I like surprises.

Barley clown, that is a crown of thorns for sure. They are grown here in florida as a foundation planting. They like an alkaline soil, very well drained, can withstand drought and high temps but will die if the temp drops. Not for outside if you live anywhere it freezes...
the only ones I have seen around here have blossoms that are yellow or red. The red seems to do the best.

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but in my experience the crown of thorns is Euphorbia milii .

Maybe someone commonly calls barberry a crown of thorns.

The euphorbia has many more large spines than what is shown.

berberis thunbergii has small spines like your sample.

rugby, around here they commonly sell "crown of thorns" with the short spikes. i can't remember what they call the other one, but i've seen it with a different common name.
