I was thinking that these green leaves were hyacinth, the leaves have been green since late last summer, but after talking to my mom I am not so sure now. Anyone know???? I have a habit of sticking bulbs in this bed when I only have a few...And I just don't remember what these might be.

Grape hyacinth is what I was thinking, but also have crocus planted in the same bed, but they are planted in a different spot ???I think???. I also have some other hyacinth's planted in there and a couple of surprise lillies..which have never bloomed. And possible a few tulip bulbs. I guess I will have to just call this flower bed "My surprise Bed" Well whether it is crocus or grape hyacinth, do you think they will bloom since they have had green leaves since late last summer, and if it were hyacinth, would the leaves be hardy enough to have survived freezing weather? I know the crocus can.

The leaves do look like crocus. And Bill is usually always right.

I am in pretty much the same climate , and my grape hyacinths have been up like that since late summer . I do not see any of my crocus up yet . :-)

Looks exactly like crocus leaves to me too....

I guess I will have to hope that what ever it is blooms this year and I/we will know for sure. If it does I will post a picture.

Comfrey,
Is there a white or grey*ish* stripe
down the middle of the leaf?
It looks like it to me, and my crocus's
have the stripe, the grape hyacinths don't
have the stripe...
Posted By: comfrey Re: What Kind of flower/Bulb? - January 15th, 2006 at 11:29 AM
Yes it does have a stripe down the middle of the leaf.

I have some crocus that I know for sure where they are that are just sprouting, but don't recall planting any other crocus in that bed, but since I have a habit of sticking odds and ends in this bed there is really no telling what may be growing there.

My grape hyacinths, as of ten minutes ago. What appears to be a stripe is actually the lighter green underside of the fluted leaf, with the darker topside being curled downward, giving the appearance of a stripe in a photo.

Ok..It is not Grape hyacinth, they are blooming all over the front yard and the leaves are different. If it was crocus why has it not bloomed yet? My small crocus have bloomed already. The leaves are still the same and green, I check it almost daily now to see if anything is happening, so far nothing, hope what ever it is blooms so I will know what it is.

Did you say they'd bloomed before,
or these were new?

I think I have the same mystery going on here--if you pull up one of the bulbs, is it small and white? Does it grow sorta like a clump of grass? I have those sprouting up all over one part of my yard-I forget what they're called, but they get a white, star-like flower in april or may (zone 6). I'm going to search around to try and find out what it is again....

Star of Bethlehem/Ornithogalum umbellatum ???????? Duh ????????
Posted By: rozy221 Re: What Kind of flower/Bulb? - March 25th, 2006 at 07:34 AM
That may be it weezie-it looks like the same flower, although I've never checked out the underside of mine. Plus, because mine are scattered around in my yard, they never get that tall--but I think that's what it is-Thnak you!

Finally these bloomed and here is what it is: [Linked Image]

Some sort of surprise lilies and now I remember placing the bulbs there, 3 years ago and this is the first time they have bloomed. They grow like the naked ladies...leaves then the leaves die back then all the sudden a flower stalk shoots up and blooms.

I know they sell them on QVC...
Red Spider Lily??
Or something like that...
Posted By: comfrey Re: What Kind of flower/Bulb? - September 5th, 2006 at 03:45 AM
Yes that is...all the guesses were wrong, I am so happy to have it finally bloom, even though the bed is full of that horrible weed with the blue flowers, they manage to rise above it and bloom, can you tell I am happy???
Posted By: weezie13 Re: What Kind of flower/Bulb? - September 5th, 2006 at 07:12 AM
I almost bought some of those..
but I opted for some Gloriosa Lilies instead.
*and I just couldn't get them to grow in the
containers I picked..*
But they refuned my money..
*Can't complain too much*

I got these mail order with some other bulbs, but apparently they were baby bulbs, since I am thinking they were part of a package deal and they all were very cheap. Either way I am thrilled at what they turned out to be, now to clean out the flower bed of that invasive weed with the blue flower.

Crocus . . . I like the idea of the grape hyacinths, but I don't think so.

Crocus, for sure.
