My mom gave me an earth box yesterday. Have any of you guys used these? I've read up on them, and they sound really great. Do any of you have any experience you can tell me about?

Seemed very healthy when I saw them in late summer...

I haven't used these, but I found this site that tells how to make your own and was considering making one or two to try them out.

I made one this weekend but using a 6 gallon container (figured I'd recycle the wine juice buckets). I planted 6 week old Brandywine tomatoes (2) in it that have started to flower already and was running out of room under the gro lights. I know they are going to be crowded but if they have survived so far.... And it's been nice up here. Almost spring weather. I will let you know whether I killed them or if they thrive. I will also take pics and post. I have another 2 plants so I will be doing 2 more this week before I go on vacation. I figure if I can leave them with enough water by my west facing patio doors they should be fine by the time I come back.

Here they are. Not sure what happened to the little buds that were forming they are still there but have not opened. They have grown quite a bit in the week I was away. I also put one in a makeshift one. Pie plate underneath soaking up the water.


Wonder how long they will survive in there. I can start setting them out probably in a couple of weeks in their containers and bringing them in at night. depends on the weather really. Or maybe leave them out at all times, unitl our May or June or July snowstorm.

First of all Brandywine tomato plants are monster sized and you can grow one plant per bucket, yield will not be as good. But if this only a temporary set up then you should be fine. The one in the pot will not grow all season in that pot, but then again if this is only a temporary pot and you plan to set them out into the ground then it should be fine also.
