First of all, is Jasmine considered a shrub? I think it is, but am not sure. If not, I'm in the wrong topic.

jasmine, most varieties, is a vine. however, i have seen jasmine, like wisteria, trained into a shrublike appearance with lots of time and hard pruning. i've never done it though.

Okay, thanks guys. I wondered because I saw one in a yard that looked like the one you spoke of jiffymouse. Think I will take my question to plants and flowers!

if you want a shrub that would naturally give the effect of jasmine, check into 'natel plum'. it has jasmine scented flowers & blooms sporadically. the fruits are like giant cranberries. carissa macrocarpa

RugbyHukr, I like that! I think I have a place in the yard for something just like that. One of the reasons I ask about Jasmine and the "poison", is that I wanted to plant something that would run along our fence. We have horses and cattle, and I did not want them to get to anything that was poisonous. I really want something out there running along that fence, but know, or think I know, that anything I plant out there, the livestock will eat if they can get to it. I do not want to take any chances of poisoning them ya know? I have also heard that animals will not eat things that will harm them. Don't know if this is a solid fact or not. Do you have any ideas on that?

Linny, I don't know if cows will eat it but deer will eat honeysuckle down to a nub--they love it. Very often, cows will eat almost everything deer will eat. I'm not sure about the confederate jasmine though.

Vigna caracalla is in the pea family and has edible flowers. probably safe for cattle.

Madagascar jasmine is also non-toxic.

I think other jasmine are also safe.

Non Poisonous Plants
