A co-worker has her office ceiling running wild with Heart Leaf Philodendron and it's beautiful!!! cool She broke me off a "piece" for me and told me to put it in a jar (or something)with water;roots will grow and I can then plant it in soil. Another co-worker did the same and hers turned out fine but I've had no such luck. frown I even put a little dirt (potting soil) in the bottom of the container thinking it would help it "take root". I even began using only water I'd let sit 24 hours or longer; no such luck there either. shk
I eventually went out a bought me one which was about 1 foot tall and growing. I still have the "piece" she gave me in hopes that it will take root and I in turn will have a new skill and can root "pieces" of my own to give to others for them to enjoy this wonderful, decorative plant. HELP. eek

hi syl, welcome to the garden helper... and congrats on your new plant. about the cutting you have - it can take up to 2 months for the cutting to grow significant roots. don't worry about it, don't feel bad 'cause it is taking too long.

do put the jar/vase/bottle of water with the cutting in a nice well lit place and do change the water about once a week, more often if it starts to get cloudy or smelly. when i change my rooting water, i usually rinse the cut end off with the plant water (i keep a gallon jug just for my plants) before it goes back in the jar.

good luck and keep us posted! oh, and don't put the cutting in too big of a pot to start with, it won't grow up and out much while it is still establishing its roots.
