Home Depot finally got in some AVs!!!
They probably got them in for Valentine's Day, but I got to the store today. They weren't as full as they usually are, but I was able to find a nice one to compliment the nice self watering pot that Triss sent me a while ago! kissies

Very pretty! I've been thinking of getting one too.

My mother keeps hers on the top of her clothes drier which is by a south facing window in her kitchen.. she swears they do so well because of the vibration of the drier!!
PS- her name is Lynne, spelled with an E like yours so everytime I see you post, I think of my Mama cool

awwww - that's sweet! I don't know of too many Lynne's with an "e", but coincidentally, my husband's sister has the same name! Weird, huh?

When I was posting the pictures, I saw that I had bought one last year the same week - on 2-12-07 - again, pretty weird!

Your new one looks great Lynne and the old one looks good too. I think it will come back for you, they just take a long time.

You probably have a variety of Optimara, seems that is what I find for sale in the stores.

These are some Av's that Barleychown sent me last year. Lost the tags on some so have no Idea what the Lavender one is called. Next to it is the blue Hawaii she sent me. Notice in the one the Willie Diane gave me for V day.

These last two are of same plant with flash turned off so it wouldn't wash out the color.

Wow--what pretty AVs. I used to have lots of beautiful AVs. Maybe now that I'm in my new house with an east facing window I need to try some again. They are soooo pretty. And Lynne, I think yours looks like it should make a comeback just fine. Triss is right, they take their sweet ol' time.

Well... I'm in twubble now!

Just had to have these 2 that were in the grocery store today - especially since they were much less than I paid at HD the other day!

This pink has such a different tone to it - I really can't describe it -
it's not a pinky pink!

And of course everyone needs to have a purple and white one, right?

Yes, Triss - I saw some in WalMart today, and I know that HD carries them even though they are pretty pricey there.

I was actually reading up on self watering planters the other day, and many people "make their own" simply by using a clay pot inserted into a glazed pot. The aesthetics are different of course, but the idea works.

Interestingly... I've also read where some people do not like using them, saying that it keeps the plants too wet. Since I haven't had one in use for long enough, I'll have to see what happens... But hearing about the successes that people have had here, I'm sure they are fine. thumbup

It is all personal preference, that is for sure. I was thinking of making my own with the clay pots by painting them myself and glazing them. Just have not gotten around to it yet.

Lynne,
I can't believe you are buying afircan violets!!!!
shheeesh...do I have bridge to sell you laugh laugh laugh

I would not use self watering pots. My AVs like to get be pretty dry (well, they don't really have a choice do they) I always feel the the soil...

It's the window. they like cool, bright - but not a lot of direct sun.

Jane - ever since I lost my very first AV, that was my great aunt's, and I kept growing for 31 years in my parents' house, I have not been able to keep one for more than a few months. (No, I did not live in my parents' house that long, but the plant did, and I kept it alive - my mom has a pretty brown thumb, and my dad wasn't interested)

This time I am determined!
I might not be opposed to receiving some bridges... er... um... leaves
from you once the weather warms up and it's ok to mail some! laugh Duh
