Hi all,
I'm a newbie here and in the whole gardening arena.
I moved into a house a number ofmonths ago and found that some of the pepper plants were dying and that they were being 'choked' by a few other plants/trees, so i planted them in pots.

i'm not sure what kind of peppers i have but the image below is the closest to what it looks like.

if someone could identify it ... it'll give me an idea of what kind of pepper i have.

They look like some kind of Cayenne or Hungarian Sweet (Sweet Banana)....

But we have some serious pepper eaters and growers here, so give some of them a bit of time
to come thru and maybe help you with a better identification...

GD they look like the Serrano peppers to me but could very well be Cayenne. I would just almost bet it is Serrano both are good snacking peppers not very hot.

Oh yes, could be those...

The only one thing I know about that variety though is the blunt end..

Do you think your ends are blunt *or rounded,
not pointed*

Okay, for me, first I want to say,
I have never grown a Serrano pepper...
so, I can not say from first hand experience..
I have grown Cayenne's, Jalapeno's, Hugarian Wax peppers, Bell's, Sweet Banana, and Chili Habanero's.. *those last one's didn't do so great, but I got a late start*
So, like I said, I have no experience in actually growing them..

I basically went on idenification by looks...

The one's in the picture posted, had a point to the end..

And any reading I did on the Serrano, all had blunt/round ends.. and the body's of the pepper's look meaty...

The one's pictured in the post, to me, gave me more of a Cayenne *type or style* look, long, thin, *sorta* and pointy and non~meat *thick walls) inside..

But Jimmy very well could be right, if he's grown them, and he would know what variety he picked and grew better than I would...

Did we ask you yet GD if you've tasted them yet???

And to your question, about when do they turn red..
In my growings', mine turned red if I left them long time on the vine *turned in succession of a peach/orange then to red* ...

hehehe ... okay.

I haven't tasted them yet ... i'm kinda scared of picking it out too early or too late ...etc.

I've never really had any plants before. So I feel a little hesitant at times to do anything but water and make sure they get enough sunlight.

They do look fairly meaty, which gets me excited.
I think it's been a little over a month since I put them in pots ... and I started with 0 > 13 ... then the very next day ... to 22 ... and now to over 30 ... which is cool I think.

I'm just not too sure when to pick them or if they're supposed to go red etc.

but this forum is really helpful laugh

cheers

ps. any other things i should know?

Let me see if Longy is around..
He's from your country and he grows veggies..
*not 100% sure he grows peppers, if I remember,
but sometimes he's out on long runs..*
let me see if he can get a bit of help to you
with brands of peppers that might be popular in your area.. Duh
Give him a bit to come thru as he goes out for work a couple of weeks at a time..

The only thing I can tell you about growing peppers, is if you pull up on them, like grab them, pull towards you~then straight up, if they snap off, they're ready to pick...
If they seem to fight you, they may not be...

Well, I am tickled "pink", so to speak, that
you're pepper turned red and you were able to
harvest it..
Isn't that a great feeling of eating veggies you grew...
and hottttttttttttt, woooo~wwwwwweeeeee..
I'll bet.. I like to make salsa with my hot
and bell peppers...

What do you do with yours???
Is that the only kind of pepper you grew???

Longy, the other Australian we talk with here,
says the vegetable garden is really busy this time of year for you and your area....
*here we're in winter and it seems different to talk with someone experiencing their summer when we're havin' snow...*

Yeh ... it's summer at the moment and it gets pretty hot here.

IT IS a great feeling to eat something you've grown.

I like to farnish battered chicken with fried garlic, hot peppers and spring onions.
Apart from that, i like to chop peppers and mix it with some soy sauce ... and then i use that sauce on spare ribs.

right now, that's the only peppers i have ... except for the seeds i took out from this huge pepper a number of weeks ago ... I don't know what kind of pepper that was though.

I'm eager to start growing some capsicum though. would love to see all those colors smile

anyone got some good recipes for peppers?

cheers all.
