Trying out my new feed at my bird feeder I had one of my FAVORITE visitors, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. These tiny birds are common Wintertime visitors to feeders and prefer suet. They are EXTREMELY hyperactive, BUT are NOT scared of people and will often let you get close enough to ALMOST touch them. I took these pictures from 2-3 feet away.

And another colorful and MUCH MORE COMMON visitor to my feeders, a Blue Jay.

You probably got kinglets, Jane. Put up a suet feeder if you don't have one and they should come. You are right on the edge of their winter range but they should be migrating throught this spring. You DO have the Golden-Crowned Kinglets in your area but I haven't seen any around any feeders. I see Golden-Crowned most often in mature, old-growth forests high on ridges or near water. they are in small loose flocks in the tops of trees.
