I posted pictures of this plant exactly a month ago it turns out. We didn't get a clear ID on it, and now it's got a flower bud in the center. I'm not sure it's going to make it through any more freezes, and need to know what it is and if I can take it indoors to overwinter?

close-up (as close as I could clearly get...)

It looks very similar to an Eryngium, perhaps Eryngium yuccifolium?

Good guess, Alan, but it's not quite right.
The leaf structure and growth is not the same - my leaves are somewhat "rippled" and thick - almost succulent. Ther grow more "outward" than all the pictures I just checked on Eryngium.

This is sooooo frustrating!
I wish it would hurry up and bloom - I think it would be easier to identify then. But I'm just not sure it will have enough time for that before a killing freeze.

Would be sad to save it if it is a weed.

Lynne can you cover it somehow if a freeze is expected to give it more time to bloom?
My alyssum and johnny jump ups decided after a couple good frosts here they'd bloom like crazy. Maybe that plant likes it cooler too? Duh

That's a great idea, Wrennie - I do have some large pots that I could place over it in a frost.

I just wish someone here would come up with an ID - 'tis a puzzlement! Duh idea

Perhaps it's in the thistle family, like Carduus or one of the common weed thistles.

Not all thistles have jaggers...here's one of mine and it has smooth leaves (but it's not what you have.)
