Have you cought any fish out yet by any chance? Yep. Yesterday when they were fliiping around in one of the plants one of them ended up on the rocks at the edge of the pond. Before I could get around to the side of the pond it was at, it flipped back into the water by itself. They're still at it this morning.....

Glad it flipped itself back in Cindy. What kind of goldfish are they? They look bigger than what my FIL put in his pond. Though your pond is bigger too!

What kind of goldfish are they? They are the 22 cent disposable goldfish from Wal-Mart. They were an inch long when I got them (5 of them). When we put them in the little pond they were so tiny we couldn't even find them until they grew a little bit. The original 5 had a million babies last spring, of which 80+ survived (that's the "babies" in the pictures)...they are huge, and the 5 I started out with are GIANTS. I guess I got my dollar's worth, didn't I?

I always read they get pretty big depending on the size of the pond. I'm sticking to minnows or something when we dig mine out...preferably all male ones.

Good luck with that Loz. I don't think it would be easy to tell the sex of minnows

but remember, they still have a genetic "max size" determination... probably somewhere around 8-10 inches.

Hi Jennifer - welcome to the forums.
By the way... I did google this topic - you'd be surprised what you can find online - if you read back a few posts, I put in some quotes.
Are your comets in a pond, or tank?
I don't live to far from you - as a matter of fact, I bought my car in Wappinger Falls! A camry.
Hope you'll come down and visit with us in the Banter Hall in the coffee house and tell us a bit more about yourself?

Well, maybe you could let them mate once, and then separate them. Goldfish CANNOT be spayed or neutered LOL Ok this cracked me up..........That would be one heck of a vet right there. How do you tell the difference?

Well, after reading this..i am a little disturbed at how many fish i will have when it's all done with..how many times a year do they do this little thing..i mean..i don't need anymore fish..i already have enough..i wanted to pick the ones i wanted..not become an instant mother of 12,000 fish..if my fish start having babies..i'll have more than i can handle..i already have 7 goldfish and 3 koi..i wonder if they interbreed..wouldn't that be funny..hahahahaha

Lst year I had 2 goldfish. I didn't know they had babies untill they were about an inch long. Out of the ,what 100's, of eggs only 2 survived. One looks like it's mom and the other it's dad. I ususaly have a big problem with frogs. Maybe they ate the other eggs or hatchlings. I am looking forward to seeing how many survive this year, cause they're at it again. My plans for another pond and will need a few more fish would be great to breed my own. I'm suprised at how many survived in langs pond.

afgreyparrot, i envy u for having success in breeding your goldfish. I am trying to learn on how to actually enhance the chances of my goldfish breeding. I have a small pond measuring about 7 to 8 ft. in length and about 1.5 ft depth. I have a pump which pumps water into my filter which inturns flows back into the pond. My questions would be the survivor probablity of the eggs. I am sure the eggs will gets sucked into the pumps and ended up in the filter system or become fishcake.

cyberblues..... I hate to admit this, but after my fish finished their egg routine, I drained 3/4 of my pond and put new water in it, hoping that I drained the eggs out. I can't handle anymore fish! I hope you get some babies soon! Welcome to the forum! Cindy

Cyberblues, that was a good point! What is to stop the eggs from going into the filter?

the fishes, if you look at cindy's pics, are in the shallows, in the plants. that is why the eggs aren't sucked in the filters. they are caught in the shallows in the plants. since i have no shallows, i get no babies.
