There is a small amount of mint growing outside the apartment building where I live. I pinched some off and tried to make tea (I love store bought Mint Medley tea). I don't know how to make tea from 'scratch' (tea bags, ya know?). I washed the leaves first, boiled water and dropped the leaves in to 'steep'. It was nasty!
I thought maybe I hadn't used enough leaves, so the next time I used more. Nastier!! Please tell me how to make tea from scratch using fresh mint. Thanks

Very good sites Lorena!!!! I would like to mention something else about making your herbal tea:

When harvesting your own herbs allow to air dry and do not crush the leaves when they are dry...crush them when you are ready to use them. When you crush the leaves it releases the volatile oils. You do not want them released until you get ready to use them, whether for tea or cooking. The Volatile oils are where you get the flavor from.

Shirley, the mint isn't growing where it would be getting exhaust from cars is it?
Did you mean the mint is in a good spot away from a parking area?
Out here we have prostrate rosemary in our street medians.
These rosemary plantings have NO fresh fragrance and are really gross from traffic.
I just want to make sure you're not using mint that's exposed to pollutants.

DeborahL, thanks. Yes they are behind bldg. around the edge of a little fishpond-garden area, all to its self. The parking out front is pretty far away.

A friend showed me how to prepare fresh mint for tea. After picking the mint, pick through to remove any brown or badly bruised leaves. Wash well (I use a strainer and rinse very well). Let dry for a few hours. Place in Pyrex dish and microwave for about a minute, move it around in the dish, then microwave for another minute or so til very dry.
Allow to completely dry for a day then crush and store in zip lock bag or mason type jar. I put about a tsp of the dry tea in a small teapot and let steep for a few minutes. My friend drinks as is, but I think it's better with some sugar or splenda. Very good for settling the stomach. wavey

Thank you mrw - I think, from what some of you have said, my problem may have been using them fresh, right after washing them, instead of letting them dry, or making them dry in a microwave. When I see some more I will dry them and try again.
