My Impatiens plant indoors was thick with blooms, then when they were gone and it was loaded with buds again, they got fat but all fell off without opening. What was the difference? They are in an east window, and I heard they like water so by the time the top of the dirt starts to dry out I water them. Help please.

I have some inside, pink doubles.. Doing great.
They dont need excessive water..
Mine are in the east window. Morning sun. I mist them an water only when the soil looks dry on top. Not soaking wet ..Like every 3 days, just a little bit.. In the winter they need less water, unless it is by a heating fixture. That drys them quick.

How long will they live indoors? I've only seen them as outside annuals.

Thank you Dodge, a lot, for your help!

Margaret, I have had it since the Sunday School kids planted a tiny little piece in a styrofoam cup, which they presented to each woman after church last Mother's Day. I repotted it and it has gotten bushy and 8" tall, probably 10" across at its fullest part. Was loaded with about 20 buds which bloomed 3 or four at a time, but this last crop of that many buds got fat but wouldn't open, finally fell off. I have fallen in love with the plant. Right now it has no buds and I assume it is going into a dormant stage (maybe why the buds wouldn't open.) Thanks for your interest.

If they ever bloom again I will see about taking seeds.

My plant is doing beautifully, even putting out new growth, all over! Just not blooming. I do believe is in a dormant cycle.

Someone else,in another posting topic I think, about propogating them. Just recently I cut off some pieces and put them in a wine-glass of water, and they have the most beautiful little roots on them!! I can hardly wait to have time to plant them in a little pot I have. I love my Impatiens!!

Yes, given enough light (and food!) they bloom all winter.

Thanks! I fed it yesterday! It's so green and crisp and healthy! I moved it away from draft onto the middle of diningroom table, under a bright, warm light which I leave on for it from the time I get up until I go to bed! Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed for buds to appear again.
